Lucky 3-3 split

Last night in my local club, I get following bunker:

[hv=d=n&v=e&s=sakq652hakq74dc52]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv]

I'm preparing myself for a GF 2-suiter opening, but my partner opens 1! :) I already smell some slam coming around, and with our methods a jump shows GF. So I bid 2 GF with 6+s. Bidding continues and we end up in 7 (opps quiet):

1 - 2

3 - 3

3 - 4NT (RKC )

5 - 7

Partner's hand was:

[hv=d=n&v=e&s=sakq652hakq74dc52]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv]

7 made on a lucky 3-3 split, but 7 is a LOT safer. I thought my partner should've bid 4 instead of 3 after 4sf, but he felt like the stiff was more important to show (however with a 7 card I would probably bid 3).

Now I wonder, how do you guys find 7, the safer slam? With relays it's über easy, but in natural bidding you get that damned 4sf :)

I never played strong jump shifts, but I believe its designed for 1-suiter hands, not 2-suiters.

I'm actually quite fond of Strong Jump Shifts over minor suit openings. However, as Fluffy points out, these work best if you play a disciplined style. As I learned SJS, the bid promises one of three different hand types:

1. A self sufficient suit that expects to play for no losers opposite X in support.

2. A NT orient hand with a 5+ card suit

3. A 5-4 type hand with a sgood 5 card suit and secondary support for partner's minor.

Accordingly, I wouldn't jump to 2 with the hand in question.

1 1

2 2

3 3

4 4NT etc

The 2 is FSF, 3 is nothing more to say, 3 is natural GF at least 5-5, 4 is cue-bid.

If you have the agreement that this hand starts with a SJS, then you probably need to also play that 5-5 hands show the second suit, but 5-4 hands rebid NT if there is a danger of using up to much room. In your sequence, then, opener could support the 3 bid knowing it was a 5 carder.

dont jump rebid 2s with this hand, start with 1s. jump shift only if

1) has fit

2) solid single suit

3) 18-19 balanced hand with a suit.

refer to lawrence's 2/1 workbook:)

This is the theory, but I am not sure it isn't going a bit far.

If I think that I will be able to bid to the correct contract after eg 1 2 with any GF hand with long hearts (and that is what one does believe if one plays 2/1GF), then I should also be able to do it after 1 2, even if I have a second suit, or non solid or even a measly 16 balanced points.

Lawrence's points, however, are valid if the JS is to the 3 level.

So my "2/1 extended" system (patent pending) says that all 2/1 bids are GF whether they are jumps or not, and all 1/1 bids are therefore non-forcing. It's so simple, it must work :)

i like eric's auction up to 4c, since i'm not positive that would be understood as a cuebid for hearts..

1d/1s

2c/2h

3d/3h

4h/4nt

It may not be understood as such, but it clearly should be!

If opener has "nothing more to say" over the FSF 2, then he doesn't have rebiddable . So when responder shows that his hand has genuine , thus making the hand a misfit, opener can not possibly want to rebid naturally now.

The trouble with bidding 4, and not 4 is that responder might be worried that openers hand is x xxx AKQJx QJxx.
