IMP pairs. And now ... ?

Agree with everybody

4 = 10, 2 = 9, 2 = 8, Pass = 7, 3 = 6, 2 = 5, 4 = 1.

I don't understand Nige's 2 choice,(or his other options, 2?) If you are playing 2/1 the hand is nowhere near strong enough for a 2/1 and if

you are playing STD, you are both overbidding and misdescribing the hand.

Just the calls that you might consider. You don't want to be too predictable. FWIW, the "logic" was

  • 4 = Automatic on a good day.
  • 2 = Lead-directing.
  • 2 = Picking off their suit.
  • Pass = Crippling the dog.
  • 3 = Timid.
  • 2 = Pathetic.
  • 4 = Because the OP gave it as an option. (Unlikely to work but it could).

3 = Timid.

I don't agree with this one. If partner is 'out of luck' or a subpar player, I think 3 would work out much better. Also, since this hand qualifies for 9 dummy points and has 6 HCP, it's perfect for a Mixed Raise, if you play that (I hate Bergen Raises, but I know Meckwell play 1M-3M as Mixed).

Having said that, I voted for 4 in the poll.

I agree with this. I think 2C is a very poor bid and would rate it as 0. 4S for me.

So 1-2,3-3, 3 is neither a cue bid for hearts, nor should partner expect a double fit in hearts and spades?

Hi,

4S instead of 3S.

One thing - 4S is certainly weaker than 3S, and at one point in time you should

signaling, that you dont have any interest in slam, maybe p gets the message.

The other - I would not bid hearts, I have no experience with psych bids, ...,

if you do it, you risk, that p expects things you dont have.

With kind regards

Marlowe

OK, next question. If you had a conventional limit raise available, would you use it with this hand?

btw I included 4 as an option becasuse I consider splinters common enough to be recognized by an advanced+ pickup partner. Maybe I am assuming too much.

I would use a Mixed Raise on this hand (showing 4-5 trump, and just weaker than a Limit Raise). Splinters are not only Game Forcing, they show 10-14 HCP (3+ controls).

Of course a splinter is GF, but if the alternative is a direct 4, it might not be such a big deal. Personally I agree that it should show more high card strength, the idea being to reach good slams where partner has no heart waste. I have not heard of a 3+ control requirement though.

If you play Bergen raises this is a 4d raise

5s, less than ten hcp and 1-1.5 outside QT

Purpose of this is to give pard some information if he needs to make a highlevel decision.

Limit raises, mixed raises and a direct 4s raise are different hands from this.
