Bid this slam

4 showing a good raise to 4.

At matchpoints I think south should just gamble on 7N. I think north has 7 hearts for 3 the vast majority of the time, and if he doesn't there are other chances. 7 has more chances of course, with the spades ruffing out.

If north instead just gambles on the club control and keycards himself, it should also work (4n-5d-5n-6c-6d-6n-7n perhaps?)

If south starts with 2 instead of 3 it'll be even smoother (2-3-4-4)

I'm torn.

South is probably good enough to take control, despite lacking the diamond control. But, I tend toward the conservative initially, if I have the ability to later be aggressive. So, I like the 4 general cue suggested by karlson.

That said, I would not bid 4, unless that is meant as Kickback (without explanation that it is) or a "you ask or answer" type of relay (again, karlson does not explain).

I would like the "you ask" idea here, if that is what was intended, except that I have the seventh heart AND my outside King is one under trumps. With only six hearts, I would feel great answering, as I can show everything. In a similar auction except holding the club King and partner rebidding 3 instead, I would like answering, as I could accept a "grand last train" and because partner has space for that call.

As it is, I want to ask with this hand, for these two reasons. So, after 4, I would bid whatever is the assured ask (4 if kickback or 4NT). Finding two with the Queen (5), I can ask for the club King (5NT), knowing that the good answer (6 specific) will enable the grand last train (6) by me.

This, IMO, is a key aspect of this set of hands. It seems like Responder, after 4, must decide on captaincy allocation and should do so based upon a reasonably predictable scenario of who will be able to make the grand last train call.

BTW, GrLT can be accepted by continuing calls to suggest 7NT, which should be found, IMO. Responder bids 6 GrLT, and Opener can bid 6NT (no side Kings because would bid 6 or 7, and no club Queen because would bid 7, but interest), which allows Responder to bypass 7 (no club Queen, which would have interested Opener) to bid 7 (diamond King), which should be deemed (IMO) just enough to grow up the diamond Queen into trick 13 at notrumps (enough to abandon the hedge of maybe establishing spades through ruffs or establishing a spade menace through ruffs).

I'd start with

1 - 2

3 - 3

But now I'm a bit stuck. I don't think this is good enough support for hearts to bid 4 although it works out nicely. I have too much extra for 3NT, so I would probably bid 4NT. But this leads to a problem of not being able to check for keys.

4NT - 5

5

Should get to there though.

As it is, I want to ask with this hand [ North ], for these two reasons. So, after 4, I would bid whatever is the assured ask (4 if kickback or 4NT). Finding two with the Queen (5), I can ask for the club King (5NT), knowing that the good answer (6 specific) will enable the grand last train (6) by me.

I'm with Ken on North taking control with the keycard-ask ( my choice is 4S!-kickback for Hts ), but my auction would start like Jilly's--a 2NT rebid by Opener showing 12-14 or 18,19 ( and with the latter will bid 4NT over 3NT ) .

After finding South with the remaining key cards ( 4NT = 0/3 ), you don't have to bid 5S! as your K-ask.

You can use the "2nd step", 5D!, ( 1st step = 5C would be hQ-ask ) which conserves even more space.

That way when the club K is shown with a 6C reply, it denies both the sK and dK.

This way Ken's 6D! next, as a "last train grand slam try", is more specific.

It must be asking for 3rd Rnd Ctrl(s).

South is willing to accept with two pointy Q's .

1S - 2H!

2NT - 3H

4C - 4S!

4NT - 5D!

6C - 6D

7H - ?? North leaves it in 7H just in case South's 3rd Rnd - Ctrl is a worthless doubleton .

1 - 2 (5+ ; GF 5+)

3 - 3 (extra's natural ; natural)

3NT - 4 (not sure what's best here, 4 may be better ; Kickback)

5 - 5 (0/3 ; specific K ask)

6 - 7 (K, not K ; Q?)

7 - 7NT (no, but Q ; w00t)

remark: 7 can't be to play, otherwise responder would've bid 4 to set trumps.

1S 2H

3C(extra value) 3H(6+ H)

4N(balanced invitation, denies H fit, about good 17 to 19) 5D(transfer to H, showing 7 or more H)

5H(transfered) 6D(cuebid Ace, shows even number of KC, grand slam interest)

7C(cue bid K, trying for 7NT) 7D(DK)

7N now 13 tricks.

Seems like everyone is getting to the grand, unless an actual partner is involved. ;)

I was watching a decent pair at bidding practice and they had

1-2

3-3

4NT-6

3 only showed 6 hearts, and 4NT was quantitative.
