helene_t
2♥ probably works as well but a dbl, just in case RHO is psyching, can do no harm I think. Opps won't have the values for bidding 3♣ (unless opener and/or responder is systematically able to make a barage bid in this situation) so we probably will get to show our hearts next round. nigel_k
Double then bidding hearts suggests 5-4 not 4-5. I would rather play in hearts since we have a known fit there and when RHO is not psyching (which will be most of the time) there will often be a third or fourth round spade loser that we can discard if we play in hearts. 2♥ is not enough so I would bid 3♥.
Hanoi5
2♥. I'd probably double if my other suit was a minor, but with 5♥'s why would I want to show a 4-card suit?
the hog
3H looks good to me. I do not play a double as penalty here anyway as there is little point. If rho has psyched, he will pull so there is little point. I prefer a natural 2S, (but not on this hand).
mike777
yes penalty i get to show almost all of my hcp and 4s. If i had 5s i would bid 2s so now i can show 4s....lots of hcp in spades. I can always bid 4h later if need be.

phil_20686
Double is find probably, but it might be best just to blast 4H. Your hand is looking awfully good all of a sudden. Its true that spades might play better, but also the pps might have a sac in 5c. I have a 7 loser hand, if partner has any good spade pips they are probably finessable. The hearts are also likely in the right place. Even if partner is 4-3 in the majors it might play better in hearts vs the 4-1 spade break. ESP if partners pips are poor. If partner puts down as little as x Axxx AKxx JTxx you are essentially completely cold for 4h. Your known to have 16 cards in the majors at least, and 17 is not unlikely, so the odds of the opponents having a v good minor suit fit are high.
