Onedown
I cannot do much else other than bid 3♦...this is the power of preempts, life is not perfect. Do I want to hear 4♥if I double? NO..can I bid 3NT..NO..

dake50
I bid 3H showing S+D. (2-suits T/O of preempts; 1-suit jumps or X then shows; bal starts X) Partner is well placed to choose our spot.

Free
3♦ is the only reasonable choice. With such hand we need to do something, but if we Dbl partner will probably bid some number of ♥, and if we bid 3NT we might go -3 after ♣ to AKxxxxx. whereagles
Nice hand for an ELC double. If pard bids n♥, you bid n♠ showing the two other suits + extras.

BunnyGo
Thank you all for your (virtually unanimous) suggestions. That's about what I thought it should be, but I wanted to make sure.
Phil
Thank you all for your (virtually unanimous) suggestions. That's about what I thought it should be, but I wanted to make sure. Surely you had another reason, or were considering another call besides 3♦?
BunnyGo
Surely you had another reason, or were considering another call besides 3♦? Yeah, at the table I doubled. As soon as I did, I was sure it was wrong. Partner had 4=5=2=2. He bid 3H. I then (in the grave I had dug myself) decided to continue digging and bid 3NT. Partner then left it in. All in all, I was hoping to not share how badly I bid this hand, but wanted to make sure I knew what to do next time so that my hand didn't stray towards the red card. phil_20686
(1) I'm not sure dble is that terrible. A 5-2 heart fit could be the best spot if partner has no club values. Your hand could be very powerful in hearts opposite hands that would float 3d.(2) You could easily play in 3d going off when 4S was cold opposite some 4423.(3) The chance of playing in a 4-2 fit is very small, given that if partner has 44 in the majors he will definitely bid 4C. In fact some people would do this with 4-5 aswell since the 4-4 fit rates to play better than a 5-3 fit anyway, and if dbler has 4-4 he should bid the lower one when doubler is say 4-3-4-2. (4) Its not as if your diamond suit is do good that 3d is guaranteed to be a decent place to play. Lots to think about. Bonus questions for the panel: Are you closer to dble if partner was unpassed? This obviously depends a lot on agreements but here a large fraction of hands with six hearts are ruled out by the failure to make a weak two. Many of these hands might pass over 3d when 4H is virtually cold. What would you do over 4c?

Maybe he should have bid 4♣. Maybe he should have pulled 3NT to 4♠. You should have a 4-card major for your double.

the hog
Did anyone notice that parther is a passed hand? I am passing this hand. 3D on that suit is awful in my opinion. X is a little better, but not much. I don't like pass either, but I think it is better than the other options.

phil_20686
Partner's hand was: J864, QT863, T7, 94 Seems like the real problem was that you tried to rescue yourself by bidding 3N. You look likely to make at least 7 tricks in 3h, when opponents are virtually a lock for 3c=, so only lost a couple of imps if you pass 3h. whereagles
Well, if RHO opens just 1♣, you have a lot of options. All of 1♦, dbl and even 1NT seem ok.
phil_20686
What would you bid if RHO had opened 1♣?pass, double, 1♦, 1♠, or 1NT? I think the whole world would bid 1d, but if you think that means that 3d should be obvious you are gravely mistaken. At the one level it is much less likely that the auction will die in 1d than in 3d. There is more room to sort out your major suit fits. The risk of going off terribly in diamonds is smaller. The risk of not playing in your best fit is smaller. ETC ETC ETC
OleBerg
3♦. At MP's it would not be unreasonable to play a style where double followed by a conversion to spades shows 4 spades and longer diamonds. That would have to be a special agreement though.
