mtvesuvius asks,,,

IMPs, I am your partner. [insert joke about me being a clueless aggressive idiot here] What do you do over 5N?

IMO...

6 = 10, 6 = 9, 6 = 8, 6N = 7, 7 = 6.

You seem to have a great hand, in context,

My partner faced this decision yesterday in the swiss -- He chose 6. Mel Colchamiro was adamant that 6 was the right call, and various others were split between 6 and 6. Personally I felt that 6 was best.

As for what 5N should mean... I think that Double is card-showing at this level, not necessarily minors. If I have a grand slam try with spade support, I can bid 6, so I figured that 5N must be a giant minor-suited hand, which was in fact what I had:

When I saw dummy, I was not unhappy where we had landed, but unfortunately the pre-empter had the J9x, so 7 was doomed for -1. As it turns out, I had already won the board for us, as the person with my hand at the other table chose to double 5 instead of bidding 5N. 5 doubled finished one down, so we lost 5 IMPs, instead of winning 14.

Adam, I don't know who argued for 6, but I think that is a bit of an irresponsible bid. It practically forces you to play 7m, so you might as well bid that straight away. Our side got preempted to the FIVE level. Bidding and making a small slam under these circumstances is already a victory and I find it reckless to look for 7 without any reasonably guarantee that you'll end up in a playable spot in the end.

FWIW I think at IMPs 6 is completely obvious and nothing else even remotely comes close to being acceptable. Any hand that partner has lesser spade support should also play well in whatever minor we land in. And ZOMG this time Adam's partner was the overaggressive one!

At MP I think it's tougher since we want to end up in spades whenever partner has stiff K or better so I think bidding 6 has a little more merit.

Off-topic: Adam did I run into you at Sturbridge on Tuesday, say hi randomly, and walk away and not recognize you? If so sorry :P

I don't think so -- I'm fairly sure I would have recognized you, although I guess it's possible :)
