nige1
This would avoid unsightly stubs when you make multiple posts or post something that you regret. If somebody has already quoted you that is just tough :(
diana_eva
This would avoid unsightly stubs when you make multiple post or post something that you regret It would be OK to be able to delete a duplicate or silly post, or something that has been already posted by a faster typer, but what if it's followed by a lot of replies. Or if it's the opening post in a thread, like that guy who polled for his home-made system, replies were negative then he wanted to delete the whole thing. I think the software is rather limited in this area, and if it's just a Yes or No regardless of the circumstances, I'd say No.
barmar
On another forum I frequent, you can delete your own post if it's the last post in the thread. That generally solves the problem of replies that don't make sense when the post they're replying to is gone. But even if someone can't delete their post, they can still edit it down to almost nothing (e.g. "N.M.", standing for "never mind"). Although in this case it at least is clear that someone wrote something and then removed it.
Elianna
Who "owns" the content of our posts? If it's the writers, then we should have the ability to control it and delete it. If it's BBO, then I guess BBF moderators can refuse to have things deleted, but I would prefer that if someone wants to delete a post (to stop a flamewar, for example, or if they were not themselves when they wrote it, or if someone had their computer and access to their BBF account, or...) that they should be able to do so. nige1
Another possible problem is that deleting a post might decrement the #reference number of subsequent posts.
Free
Deleting posts should definitely be possible somehow. If we're not allowed to do it ourselves, perhaps there should be a way to request BBO to delete the post for us (perhaps similar to the report-button where you have to explain why you want the post deleted). The moderators can decide if it's a good idea or not, and even modify quotes if they want/need to. Biggest drawback of this method is that the moderators will have some more work, not sure if it's a considerable amount or not.
gwnn
Free I often reported my posts, but I think only for multiple posts. Mods here are nice people and I don't think they mind.

They're nice and friendly but they also have a life. ;)

USViking
I have just posted a message saying "test test test". I then replaced "test test test" with the word "delete". I do not think there is a significant difference between a message consisting only of the word "delete" and removing a message from view as though it had never been posted, unless someone has repied to the message. Therefore the question becomes whether there should be a time limit on editing, and whateffect if any a reply to the message should have. IMO no edit should be allowed if someone has replied to the post, and 60 minutes should be a fair time limit on editing.
1eyedjack
IMO no edit should be allowed if someone has replied to the post, and 60 minutes should be a fair time limit on editing.I can see the logic, but I disagree. If you are responding to a thread you should I think quote, within reason, passages of particular relevance to your response. If you are editing a post to which a response has been made, you should do so in such a fashion as to preserve the readability of the thread.Provided that all parties are sensible in the application of these principles, and I believe that participators in these forums are so capable, the opportunity to retain clarity and brevity by permitting edits outweighs, in my opinion, the alternative. Vampyr
IMO no edit should be allowed if someone has replied to the post, and 60 minutes should be a fair time limit on editing. Then all readers will be annoyed when a person has replied to an OP noting that there are 14 cards, and OP can't change it...
