Bid These (Part 3 of 3)

Recommended Posts

All of these hands are actual hands I played yesterday. How would you bid them playing a reasonably standard 2/1, and if you'd like, how would you bid them in your favorite system?

Dealer: South

Vul: Nobody

East will overcall diamonds at the cheapest level possible, the opponents pass otherwise.

P-1-(2)

X-3

3-5

5N-6

6-7

I don't play 2/1, so can't comment on the 2/1 auction.

Playing 4 card majors, we'd bid as above. 5 is exclusion, 6 must be asking for the K specifically, not interested in the K/Q or A, as otherwise 6 would have been bid.

p - 1H - (2D)

3D (shows 3-card support) - 5D

5NT (denies heart queen) - 6D

7H

I don't think that 6D asks for the spade king specifically, but south will be pretty sure that the spade king is what north is looking for.

This is similar to Han's auction (which is a model of efficiency).

P - 1 (2)

3 - 5 -- Support, Exclusion

5N - 6 -- 2 Aces, Kings?

6 - 7 -- K, Natural.

At his final turn, North bids 7 rather than 7

  • to offer a choice of contracts and
  • In case RHO is void in and can Lightner double 7.

It's hard to stay neutral when you know the hands, but here it goes, in my pet system.

1NT (2) 2NT

3 4

4 4NT

5 5NT

6 7

1NT = 9-11

2NT = wierd GF hand

3 = 1st suit I can support

4NT = since pard has no diamond cue available, the hands fit and North can take charge

5NT = I'm thinking of grand.. anything else to spare?

6 = some stuff in hearts

You can tell I don't play much 2/1 as I am with ahydra in opening 2C. If we're assuming Vanilla agreements then presumably that means no Kickback and Serious 3NT?

P - 2C - (2D)

P - 2H

3H - 3S

3NT - 4C

4S - 5NT

7H perhaps. I don't think North needs to splinter after a 2C opening for South to consider slam a good prospect! @mgoetze: why would South bid the 4 card diamond suit over 2H, bypassing both 2NT and 3C?

It feels like cheating using a strong club given the OP conditions - surely the opps will compete higher than 1D on their 10 card fit - but here goes...

P - 1C = 15+ nat/bal or 18+ any

(1D) 1S = no major, GF

... - 1N = relay, usually 18+

2H = balanced

... - 2S = relay

3H = 3334

... - 3S = relay

4H = 4 controls without a club control

... - 4S = relay

5D = major suit controls, no diamond control

... - 7H

I like Han's auction a lot, and in any of my 15-17 NT partnerships it would hopefully be duplicated. However this hand came up while I was playing an aggressive 2/1 and 14-16NT... So I opened the South hand with 1. Partner bid 1, RHO bid 2, I made a Support double and partner was off to the races. We got to 7 without too much trouble, but I figured it was an interesting problem nonetheless.

pass - 1 - (2)

3 - 5

5NT - ...?

This seems like the normal start. Now North has 2 possible calls to look for grand slam, 6 and 6 (and actually a 3rd: 6 - how can partner not be happy with 2 keycards from a passed hand??). 6 naturally asks for something in and I guess 6 should ask for something in , but that's something I haven't agreed upon with partner...
