What's your call?

Recommended Posts

I would open 1 and be happy about it.

I open but I don't think you can playing 2/1

I don't understand this post. Usually when people say this they mean they would open in standard american or SEF or something like that. However, 2/1 only really applies after 1M openers, and it doesn't apply at all after 1. So what do you mean? Do you mean that you would like to open a weak NT, or 1 in 4 card majors... ?

This should be an opener for just about everyone, if you are passing you will be against the majority on the field.

What has 2/1 got to do with anything here?

This is an easy opener except for 2/1-ers. So I was wondering why he was questioning it

You hold:

A9x

AQxx

Q9x

xxx

First seat, not vulnerable. Do you open?

I open almost all 12-counts. This one is quite far away from "so horrible I wouldn't open it". First of all, it has two aces. I don't think I would pass any 12 count with two aces. Secondly, half the points are in my only "long" suit, that's pretty decent. I generally hate 4333 shapes but in some ways A9x AQxx Qx 9xxx would be a worse hand (devalue the queen a bit) - I would still open that one though, and taking away the nines wouldn't make it close either.

An example of a 12-count I might pass would be more like KJ QJx Qxxx QJxx.

I'm sorry for not being very clear. Where do you get that 2/1ers possibly have a problem opening with this hand?

Because I expect 2/1-ers to be in game with an opening hand opposite an opening hand whereas I expect to be able to stop short once in a while

And the fact that there are no 2/1 sequences starting with 1 doesn't influence the above general argument for you, then.
