Format is matchpoints, but please comment if you would lead differently at IMPs. Sorry if this is obvious.

Please rate different leads from this hand. Partnership agreement is 2/4, top of honor sequence.

Any comments on passive vs. aggressive leads against this type of auction are welcome as well.

Even my (very crude) simulation likes Q and they usually don't like active leads. As it's both standard, making my hand easier to read for partner and the most effective I choose it as my first lead :-)

My 2nd choice is 9/T and I think it's close. I wouldn't complain if partner lead it.

Agree with everyone...

A club lead stands out. ... Q = 10, T = 8, Q = 6, 3 = 5, 5 = 2.

Rixi Markus recommends you lead an ace against a pre-empt.

Lacking an ace you lead as aggressively as you can

I've actually had good success under-leading aces on this auction. This type of action (and other aggressive actions) tend to be highly effective when the opponents' strength is to your left (as it will be here). With opposing strength to the right (i.e. 2NT-Pass-4 transfer - Pass - 4 - All pass) I would tend to look more for passive leads.

Anyway, we don't have an ace, I'll go with the majority choice of a top club.

Top club stands out for an average score against the field if the opponents own their bids.

No reason to think they don't and no hero lead is attractive going for the (wrong?) top or bottom swing except maybe a heart trying to cash a couple of those before they dissapear.

Great point by JLOGIC that a heart lead is better than a diamond lead. I agree, stuff is most likely to go away on diamonds. I also agree with everybody that the club queen is best.

How do people feel about a small club instead of the queen?

Why ? We have less hearts than diamonds, so they have more on avarega also we can just blow a trick leading even if nothing is going away while it's very unlikely in diamonds.

I'd lead a to be honest, but it's far from obvious. We don't know if LHO bid 4 preemptively, as a pre sacrifice, or to make. I think there's a big chance of finding some good s in partner's hand and I want to create some tricks. On the other hand there's a chance that opener is quite short in s in which case we won't make much tricks there ofcourse.

Leading Q might look safe but it's rather dangerous imo. If we have some tricks to make, they'll probably won't go away. But leading a might give opps an opportunity to get rid of some losing s (say AT9x vs Kx).
