Is forcing pass on this auction?

We're R/W, partner made a strong call, and North is clearly pre-empting. I don't see how they can't be on. I probably would double at the table, but now that Justin has pointed it out I like pass.

Pass seems pretty obv to me, how bad will it be if partner bids something?

Let me see if I understand you correctly. You are passing the hand with 5/5 in the blacks expecting the 2NT bidder to make a call after the auction has gone (2) 2NT (5) P; (P) ?

Sorry but sometimes I can't really tell. You are joking right?

PT, many play that when the opponents are 'obviously' sacrificing, that a forcing pass applies even if we haven't shown any values. Double in this context would mean, I don't like my hand, bid at your own peril, and pass is essentially takeout. Partner is encouraged to bid or double (but not pass).

Dbl. The rest is too much of a guess to me.

Dbl is no guaranteed winner, partner is allowed to be dealt AJx, AQ, xxx, AQxxx and you haven't actually beaten 5 yet. (Give opener xxxx, J109xxx, Axx, void and partner x, Kxxx KQxxx, xxx) extreme maybe, but don't assume you're getting rich out of this. Since it looks like opps only have 9-10 hearts between them missing some high honours, I think you can assume the 5 bidder has a long suit of his own which looks like diamonds, so they probably have quite a few tricks. It can be just as bad if partner has Axx and Qx or possibly Kx.

Although it breaks a lot of rules of forcing pass, i think it makes sense to play this pass forcing.

We are talking about a hand where we did not establish the ownership of the hand

We are talking about a player's first pass to be forcing when his pd did not make a game forcing bid but a good limit hand which can be as light as 15 hcp.

On the other hand we (at least me seeing 10 hcp vs a pd who overcalled 2NT) know they are obviously saving.

I have 2 games left to me to play, 5 or 5 NT. Our side has 25-28 hcps, 2 games left available, and a fit to find at or above 5 level. And whats pd's honor ? Ax ? Kx ? AQ ? AK ? KQ ? KJ ? AJ ? Only thing i like among those is Ax.

How can i make a forcing pass after thinking/hesitating too much :P I'd DBL. I know we are very close to slam but i have too much doubts and when in doubt i am chicken. Most of these doubts could be cleared by a forcing pass, if i only could pass w/o hesitation. I dont think TD will buy the argument that this pass is obvious forcing for every player.

Nice hand Hanoi +1

Yes, defending 5 could be our last plus score, but I would hate to go back to my teammates +100 while 11 or 12 tricks in a black suit are there for the taking. And there is no guarantee that we are going plus against 5.

I am bidding 5. It may be wrong, but anything could be wrong. If it is wrong, it doesn't rate to be very wrong.

Whether it is wrong or right, 5 is shutting down pd's cooperation.

Its like a 1 way street, no turning back. Pd will pass regardless of how many he has. If my options are limited to play 5 and 5 DBLed, i wld definetely go with DBL. What makes a "forcing pass" so attractive is, it involves pd in the decision process.

You may argue (and i would agree with u ) that DBL is no different than 5 when it comes to cooperation of pd. As i said if i cld solve the forcing pass situation and could pass without hesitation, i would go for it.

Very nice problem!

First question one needs to ask is if pass is forcing. There are definitely some good arguments for it, I guess forcing is the best way to play this but I haven't thought about this before. <_<

If I think partner will interpret pass as forcing, then imo that's the best option. Otherwise I prefer 5.
