movingon
opponent opens 1 club. (You are red, opps are white) How would you rate a 2 spade overcall here? [hv=pc=n&n=sj87654ha5dat53c3]133|100[/hv] Question 2: If one were playing Ogust over a weak jump overcall, how would you rate the bid? Thanks for your responses. Bbradley62
2♠ is bad because 1♠ clearly says that you have length in spades and enough strength to overcall, including some defensive values.
gwnn
very silly at R/W. it doesn't matter what kind of 2NT relay we play over it - they come up less than 1% of the hands, usually partner has a pass, 3♠ or a 4♠ bid, if LHO even passes. whereagles
The hand is slightly offensive, but it has 2 defensive tricks, so you shouldn't hasten to suggest pard to save. As such 1♠ is probably better and it also has some preemptive value.
movingon
We don't play Ogust, by the way, but I know that some people do. I probably should have bid, but I didn't expect an Ace (or an outside King, actually) in partner's hand, and I didn't like my 3 clubs, the fact that the opener was behind my Kings, and the fact that we were red. Should I have bid--either immediately or after the opener bid 3 clubs over my partner's jump overcall? This is imps. mgoetze
I would only bid 2♠ if we are white and partner is a passed hand.
Fluffy
I don't like 2♠ because the hand is too strong if you find a fit. If you didn't have the 4th diamond I wouldn't mind that much. But overcalling 1♠ and getting raised wil mean a lot of potential tricks for our side.

[hv=pc=n&s=saq2hkj82dk98c872]133|100[/hv]Red vs white, I would expect partner to have something in addition to ♠KJxxxx for the 2♠ bid; I might raise to 3♠ directly but would certainly do it after the 3♣ bid. Hanoi5
Pass is a call. A bid includes a number and a denomination. In the hand discussed I would prefer bidding 1♠ than 2♠. Pass is not to be criticized either. 1♠ > Pass >>>> 2♠
Phil
Pass is a call and it is not worthy of consideration. I would bid 3♠ before I would pass.
aguahombre
I would bid 3♠ before I would pass.As your LHO, do I get to accept the bid which was made, rather than the replacement call?

P_Marlowe
Hi, 1S. The main issue with 2S is, that you tell partner, that you are sure, which suit should be trumps, Jxxxxx is not a suit with which to sendthis message.1S also alowes you to introduce your 2nd suit. With kind regardsMarlowe
mfa1010
A routine 1♠, no reason to spend too many brain cells on that. If one happened to bid 2♠ anyway and partner ogusts, then the respond should clearly be to show a maximum hand. If partner has a fit then the hand improves and even gets out of range for the 2♠ bid. But it is much simpler just to bid 1♠ and avoid all of this.
xxhong
This is a white 1S opener for many, so I don't see why it should be a 2S hand. opponent opens 1 club. mtvesuvius
I rate it somewhere between "It makes my eyes hurt", and "OMG GET ME OUT OF HERE THAT IS SUCH AN AWFUL BID"

movingon
Thanks all. It was a clear 1 spade bid to me as most of you suggest.I don't see much value in using Ogust over a weak jump overcall except that I suppose it allows partner to make jump overcalls on more hands, showing a 6 card suit. and white against red that could be advantageous I suppose. ?? pooltuna
I would rate a 2S overcall as horrible That good!!! at these colors? :) IMO You may need a rethink on preemptive bidding strategy, at least at IMPS. EDIT: BTW second sentence was meant for the OP. JLOL has some semblance of knowledge of preemptive bidding strategy :)

Perhaps in a future thread it will be explored as a consideration (for weak-two opening bids).
