What hands do you put where? Choose between 4M, 2C and 1M. Please supply a few example hands.

Does it vary by vulnerability? Do you play 4M as primarily preemptive NV?

What kind of hands with <22 hcp do you open 2C?

Peter

HI

My style:

2 is forcing to 3/ showing 8,5+ playing tricks.

4 / is namyats. Showing ecaxtly 8 playing tricks.

1 shows 7,5- playing tricks

4 / is preemptive. Playing tricks depending on vuln.

cheers

Hi,

I play:

1) 4M - 6-7,5 tricks depend of the Vuln;

2) 4m - Namyats - 8-8,5 tricks;

3) 2 - any GF in hand;

4) 1M - std opening - 5-7 losers;

5) 2 - multi - weak 2s in one major OR 23-24 hcp, balanced hand OR unicolor semi-GF.

Examples:

1)

Nice question....

Not vulnerable, my 4H/4S are generally horrible... but i mix it up with good hand everynow and then, ESPECIALLY if partner has passed.

I open 2 with what would be classified as an acol 2 bid in a major. This is 8 or 9 tricks, a great suit generally able to play slam opposite a singleton, and at least five controls (K=1, A=2).

That takes care most of the "good 4S" and 4H hands, that you might be tempted to open 4H or 4S on out of fear partner will pass. I add to that two instant double negatives... 2C-2H = NO TRICKS for a heart contract, and 2C-2S = no tricks for a spade contract, and by inference one trick for a heart contract, probably a ruff.

With some partners I play namyats, with the following understanding. 1) No more than 4 controls (5 vul), 2) no void, 3) a very offensive sort of hand. Escentially the 2C opening bid I mentioned above EXCEPT lacking the five controls.

Vulnerable, my 4H/4S bids will come very close to making, (with in one if they are not vul, and two if they are). This is why my Namyats gets better when I am vul.. .my preempts get better too.

So - acol 2 (5+ controls) and great suit = 2C

3/4 controls, very offensive, no void = 4C/4D

Weaker than that, 4H/4S

Vulnerable, naymats changes to include possibility of 5 controls (better hand because 4H/4S will be better too)

Here are some examples from BBO

[hv=d=n&v=a&n=sqj94h6d52ckjt653&w=sak53hj952dakq64c&e=s8hakqt843dj8ca92&s=st762h7dt973cq874]399|300|Scoring: IMP

 5NT   Pass    7#160;  Pass

4=good hearts, suit can play opposite singleton in slam, no more than 4 controls. Vulnerable, this is a almost always a hand like this.

5NT = GSF

[hv=d=n&v=a&n=sqj94h6d52ckjt653&w=sak53hj952dakq64c&e=s8hakqt843dj8ca92&s=st762h7dt973cq874]399|300|Scoring: IMP

This one is probably not perfect for 4 bid, since might play better in spades. So choice is 1H or 4C. 5S = two key cards plus heart Q. 5NT a grand slam try, the spade KQ are two extra tricks.

OK here is a mistake. East is vul. He has (if lucky) in his hand 5S and 1D and a very slow club. That is seven tricks. Vul, just open 1S or maybe a heavy 2S, that is it. I would open 1S all vul, all game types.

This hand seems too good for non-vul 4H bid and they were very lucky to get to laydown slam. But I don't want to risk 1H opening bid, so I open 4C (naymayts). Partner can now find out about my diamond control, and slam is bid with confidence.

4H vul naymats.. .is just about right. They would not steal the hand in 5S then.

This 4S bid is horrible. Just open 1S. First you are vul, second you have good defense. Third your suit is poor, and fourth, your partner might bid way too much.

In my partnership:

4 / 4 = NAMYATS - 8 - 8 1/2 Tricks (does not vary by the way)

4 / 4 = Less than a NAMYATS - could be a lot less in 3rd chair.

A few side agreements we have: Preempts are never opened with a solid suit and never with two outside cards (A's or K's).

Our 2 is part of Rosencrans Standard International system, which shows a 4-5 loser hand, at least 5 controls, and usually 19-21 HCP (but can be less if the loser and control count fits). This bid fills in a lot of the hands that don't fit out NAMYATS openers like: AKxxxxxx, AK, xx, x, but many would be queezy about opening it 2.

I would open that hand 2 in a heart beat. This hand is why I play 2H and 2S both as instant double negative. And yes, I alert my 2 opening bid (or try too... opponents are so darn fast in bidding.. i wonder if they every think)... :-)
