jules101
LAW 45C4{b} "Until his partner has played a card, a player may change an unintended designation if he does so without pause for thought. If an opponent has, in turn, played a card that was legal before the change in designation, that opponent may withdraw the card so played, return it to his hand, and substitute another (see Laws 47D and 16D1)." Could someone explain further? From my reading it looks like: * I can lead a card, say C9, LHO plays a card and I can now change my card to another higher or lower club? or * Declarer plays a card from dummy, I play a card, declarer follows and I change my mind? Is this what 45C4(b) says? If not - what does it mean?

The law seems to say that you may change the earlier card if you claim immediately that it was designated unintentionally and the director believes you (but it doesn't make sense to me). Is this what 45C4(b) says? If not - what does it mean? No, that's not what it says. It says that if I call for a card from dummy and the wrong word comes out of my mouth I can correct it as long as I haven't played from my own hand and I've corrected it the moment I realise what I've done. If my RHO has already played a card he can change it. It doesn't allow me to change my mind, nor to change a card I've played from my own hand - only one that was "designated". It could apply to a defender who stated a card he was about to play but hadn't yet actually played, though in practice that's unlikely. 1eyedjack
This question (or something very like it) was more or less thrashed out not long ago in this thread: http://www.bridgebas...__1#entry542873
bluejak
The vital thing is to understand "designated". That refers to naming a card, not playing a card. Except in extremely rare situations, only cards from dummy are ever designated.
