QQSV
I have heard that Fred is opposed to the suggestion which follows. If that is true, I hope that by begging, I can persuade him to reconsider. (Fred, do you hear my grovel?) The subject: open chat to a table by kibitzers. My request: As a kibitzer, I want to be able to (otionally) protect myself from accidentally letting my private or kibitzer-directed chat go to the whole table. My beg: I have embarrassed myself (and seen others do similarly) a number of times recently when I was discussing something (usually the current hand; occasionally a private topic) with the kibitzers or one other kibitzer, and neglected to type ctrl-K or ctrl-R before I typed my message. (It can be depressingly easy to do.) I have on occasion revealed aspects of the current hand to the players which they may not have known, and had to apologize profusely as a result. Additionally, I have sometimes chosen to shut up rather than share thoughts with other kibs (who might well have been interested) because I was afraid that I might accidentally let the comment get out to the whole table. It is definitely nice to be able to talk to the whole table when I want to--I am NOT advocating removing that capability. But if I am going to discuss the current hand (or something private), I do not want to risk bothering the entire table (or worse, revealing the hand) by my accidental release of my comment to the world. It would be nice if I were required to (otionally) type some character to force my chat to go to the room (table.) Pretty please help me stop embarrassing myself? I grovel at your feet. --Q
julie5607
I agree wholeheartedly. I think that a very simple solution would be for kib chat to default to kibs, and that a remark directed to the players or a specific individual would require a keystroke entry. Especially at big spec tables, it is very instructional for kibs to be able to discuss hands during the bidding and play with each other, however I am quite sure that this type of discussion is limited at BBO because of fear that something will inadvertantly get to the players. At some other sites it is impossible for kibs at table to talk to the players at all - I am not advocating that, since BBO really has no socially oriented lobby chat and there are often times where a few friends are together watching each other play and would like to have a friendly conversation during the game. But for tables where real hardcore bridge is going on, it would be much nicer to not have to worry that you can influence the bidding or play with your spec conversation. Thanks, Julie B)
JRG
Having also embarrassed myself, once or twice quite badly, I am paranoid over this problem. I notice that it happens quite regularly on BBO - people seem to be apologizing a lot. One suggestion I have made in the past, is that the "default" target for chat should be the previous target. So for example, if I sent a chat message to the table as my last chat message, just typing would direct the chat to the table; if I last sent a private chat message to X, then the default would be to send it to X again; similarly with chat to kibitzers, etc.
Cave_Draco
Kibitzers should be neither heard nor seen, default chat for kibitzers should be other kibitzers. If one Kibs a table, one is obliged to wait for a convenient moment before saying "Hi" &/| "Bye". All of the above is just IMO. B).
paulg
I haven't kibbitzed much so far but I like the suggestions of changing the default kibbitzer chat behaviour away from being the whole table. Paul
inquiry
Now for the loyal opposition. As a lifelong kibitizer and student of the game, I enjoy being able to chat with the players (when I kibitiz my friehds or players I respect). The table host has a number of options related to kibitizers which could be set. As a kibitizer, it is a shame when we blurt something out that we should not have said. Virtually everyone has done this from time to time. But somehow, I think inapproriate comments will continue even if this request is inacted. I have sent private messages to the wrong person several times by either clicking on the wrong name in the chat window by mistake or using cnt-r and missing who the last person was to send me a message. If the sentiment is to default messages to other kibitizers rahter than the table, ok. But at friendly games, kibitizers should be either banned by the table host from talking, or allowed to speak their minds. In tournments of course, maybe kibitizers should be silenced all together, all thought there we can still chat up the entire table.
