Symbols

I think ehhh is referring to strange suit symbols in Forums posts, not BBO itself. My guess is that these symbols are the result of mistakes made by posters.

I also sometimes see the orange squares instead of diamonds and my TrueType Symbol font is definitely ok.

I too am seeing missing diamond symbols in posts. I did some investigation, and I think it boils down to the following two problems, which would require bulletin board configuration tweaks:

1. in response to the "[DI" tag (I omitted closing bracket), the board generator is generating &diams in the corresponding HTML code, rather than &diams which is much more standard. It is using the proper numbers for the other suits, e.g. &hearts for hearts. It could also use the mnenomic ♦ which should be recognized by current browsers.

2. The default fonts it is using, Verdana, also Tahoma second choice, don't have the right suit symbols, at least on Windows. It works better with Arial.

I think it should use 9830 since that is HTML 4.x std for diamonds. Default font should be Arial, Times New Roman, or Courier New, or similar ones that have proper suit symbols at the std locations.

If the diamond seems too small (is that why you changed?), then maybe compensate with font size.

hmm, how about this??

i only see questions marks in place of suit symbols in the BBO chat window, like a supposed spade or club symbol would turn up as a ?, and a ? for a heart or diamond.

thankfully this only happens in the chat window, but not the bidding as well. still, i would like to know how to remedy this problem, thank you.

Sounds like your default font has been changed on your computer so that the symbols are missing.. Try this...

Click on the little yellow "gear" icon. It is found on the bottom row of the program window. This is the one that calls up "options"... and is located immediately to the left of the icon with the two different ACES of SPADES. When the new window opens, go the "FONT" area and choose a different font (three are listed, arial, times new roman, and Verdana... then see if that fixes the problem. Please report back here if it did or didn't. Thanks,

Ben
