Bidding Problem @ MPs

What is the purpose of the 5D bid in this auction? If you deemed your hand balanced with the 2NT rebid, you can't suddenly have such an unbalanced hand that you want to jump to your suit in a GF auction. If i were west, the action I'd be inclined to take is to find a partner who tries not to put me in spots like this.

Cooperate with your partner and he doesn't have to make silly guesses at the 5-level. He should probably pass, though. Your action seemed to deny much slam interest.

Also I wouldn't have bid 2NT. I think 3D is fine but 3C is reasonable.

I bid 6, but the first time I wrote this post I said pass.

I figure partner's hand is something like:

2=3=6=2

and about 18 points (since writing this I've allowed myself to peak at his hand and saw I was close but a little off).

I don't like passing because we'll likely lose to every 3NT hand when partner does have hearts stopped. For that reason alone I may bid 6, but when he has Qxx of hearts and AQ of clubs and six solid diamonds, then 3NT may be going down and we're in the right spot.

I dunno, I think that I should punt 6 at matchpoints, I talked myself into it while composing this post. It's hard to construct an 18 pt hand that doesn't have at least the K of hearts and A of clubs and solid diamonds.

(then I peaked and realized that it was indeed Qxx of hearts....for the record, I blame partner for this auction)

Edit: jjbrr posted while I was writing this. Everything he said is correct.

Well for starters east isn't really as competent as we thought ;). 2NT rebid is lol.

In actual play, sitting west and assuming partner to be competent, I would have to conclude that he has very strong diamonds and fears the inevitable heart lead against 3NT. Hence he cannot hold the A or K. Therefore any slam is off two top hearts, so I pass.

Maybe there's a subtle inference that hearts is the suit he's worried about, but what do you suppose this actual east would bid with x AJx AQKJxx Qxx? Why is it clear that this is a 3NT bid and the other is a 5D bid?
