Perhaps an individual's number of total master points earned should be a guide. I have a friend with 120 master points who describes herself as an "expert". She is certainly not an expert. I have paid the fee for so-called experts a few times and it is evident from both their play of the hand and bidding that they are not experts. If one wants their entry fee to be paid by another player, there is an advantage in self-describing oneself as an expert. However, it is a disservice to the person who pays to play with a so-called expert who turns out not to be one. There are many experts who do not play pay tourneys at all. BBO is a free site and there are lots of free games anyone can join. On the other hand, an intermediate but constant player who plays many pay tourneys can accumulate an impressive number of points - and that would not mean his skill level is going up, at least not because of the points he is winning. JLOGIC Posted June 2, 2011 Report Share Posted June 2, 2011 If someone is a actually an expert, the deciding factor in whether they play with a non expert or not will probably not be whether they have their 1 dollar entry fee paid. Effectively, you are saying you expect there to be real experts out there who play for 1 dollar but not for zero. He would be in fact playing for no pay. Once it was said that the chances an expert will be waiting to play with us mortals for free would be the same of getting called for a date with Jennifer Lopez or Brad Pitt. However, there are reputable experts who are available for play and pay tourneys at BBO. I guarantee you they are not loitering in the partnership desk. If you hang around places like the teaching clubs, get references from other players and you will find a respectable teacher. In pay tourneys the award symbol in players' profile is more relevant than in the free area of BBO precisely because it's the closest thing one has to a ranking system. The more you play, the more points you get. There is no way to tell whether an expert got their "7" in two months or in 6 years. If they got it in 2 months you have reasons to believe they are good. But how can you know? So the best answer is, as Hanoi said, to make your own ranking system. Edit player notes and write your comments about people's play. In time you will know who's good and who isn't. Also, as babalu pointed out, the real experts wont be hanging around the partnership desk calling out to tourney chat "invite me!"
