Certainly there are two possible actions by North - Double and Pass. I don't think either one would be crazy. With this shape I don't think the hand is good enough for a double, but others may have a different opinion.

Over a double, South's action is clear cut - 4. I don't know why anyone would bid anything else.

Over a pass, South MIGHT balance, but that action is hardly clear.

I could understand a double by North, and South should definitely bid 4 in this case.

I think balancing with the South hand is taking quite a position. I wouldn't even think of it at this vulnerability. And even at favorable it's a stretch, since the opponents haven't bid a game.

I would DBL with N hand. Yes i dont have short but i have at least 3 cards in all unbid suits and 16 hcp. Preempter has 7 or 8, when combined with mine 10 or 11 , pd is likely to be short in that suit and i have good support for whichever is his long suit and hope for the best.

On the other hand i would defienetely not balance with South hand if N passes, no way. This kinda weak balance, over a 4 level preempt, gives WAY too wide range for the guy who bid at 4th seat and i dont think it can be handled effectively in the long run.

I would have passed the North hand, intending to pass again to pard's take out dbl, so probably a missed game for me here.

The point is if pard is going to bid a 4 card major suit over my dbl, this is certainly going to be an uphill battle on the obvious club force. Even with a 5-3 fit it's not certain 4M makes (here it definitely isn't going to be a piece of cake if trumps are 4-1).

When I wrote my post I meant that X by North seemed fine and after that 4 by South.

If North decides to Pass South cannot bid unless his/her partner took a long time before passing. And that was sarcastic.

The good news is, only 13 in the deck and the guy with long trumps won't be the ones with long trumps. ;)

4C X p 4S is completely normal. You cannot pass with the north hand lol, you have a prime 16 with no honors in clubs. It is putting way too much pressure on partner to act with short clubs and a yarborough, he won't. This hand, partner had 2 queens and two jacks, and game is extremely good. Sometimes he has even more than that! Partner having a stiff club is not a huge surprise when we have 3 small and they open 4C...

To be clear, 4 after X by N is the obvious part to me, I was more wondering how crazy 4 is after a pass by N. (In addition to whether N should X)

*Waits for someone to look up myhands to see if I did it or not*

No one yet has anylysed the 4 cl bid-off course pard must take action,

with a x-------- after you bid 4 sp-now another problem arises.

the 4cl bids 5 clubs-----------

For north to pass 4cl is unheard off also opp has not opened 3n/t

so unlikly to have ace hts-and his clubs could be AQJ+

and hold K diamonds--so south could back in again with 5 diamonds.

that will sort it out

If North doesn't Dbl he's a wuss (but not crazy). If South responds anything else than 4 he's crazy.

100% in line with you.

Hi,

I think at the table I would have passed with the North hand, but the argument,

that we know, where 10 clubs are, and that p holds on avergage at most 2, makes

double very attractive - since he wont have the power to get in.

We know, that our side owns the deck, p does not know this.

With kind regards

Marlowe
