your call?

Vul v. not

N E S W

2C* 3D P** P

3H 4D ?

* = strong, 22+ or 8 1/2 tricks

** = not a double negative hand

Also: Anyone want to publish useful agreements for comp over Our 2/1 2C opener? It seems to me that, most of the time, letting O know whether R is bust or holds some values is good enough, waiting for O to reopen with a descriptive call. OTOH....?

I'm generally uncomfortable letting the weak hand take control, but RKC looks obvious.

My alternative is to pass and bid 4 over the x (and 4N over 4), but surely I'm too good for that.

I don't like 5 because it looks too much like voidwood. I prefer Blacky, because I can value my s if opener happens to have AK.

I dunno what it looks like but it ain't voidwood. Thats the only cue available.

You guys play opener for the world... I'd just try a quiet 4, eventually taking the push to 5 if nedded.

Pd opens 2, and RHO tells you he owns the suit. Your pd has the world plus moon, if not the whole galaxy.

pard does not promise the sun moon and galaxy in fact pard shows minimum hand at this point

Construct me a hand, where RHO bids the suit at 3 level and bids again at 4 level by himself (w/o support from his pd) and pd has a 2 opener. What 4 are u talking about ? You would bid 4 with this if your pd opened weak 2 or overcalled 1 for Christ's sake !

Yes your pd has minimum, in fact i will give him less than u suggested some 5 loser hands.. Are u happy with 4 ? AK AQJxx xxx AKx or here i give him some wasted hcps Axx AQxxx KJ AKJ or KQx AQJxxx AJx A.

4 huh ? Well at least u didn't DBL 4. Only thing that comes to my mind worse than 4 is to DBL 4 and suggest pd we defend this hand. Ohh i see, by saying minimum hand, you count beans, pd = 22 hcp we have 6 hcp, 28 hcp wont make slam so lets stop at 4 ?

And by the way, just out of curiosity, at which point did you decide pd showed a minimum 2 opener ? Was it the 2 bid or 3 bid that indicated the minimum hand ?

That's pretty difficult, because most decent RHO's would bid 4 immediately or pass in their second turn...

once E has shown not a double neg type hand you have a big arsenal of

bidding tools available to you. Pass and pull is stronger than bidding

directly so over the 4d bid i suggest

4h around 4 points generally balanced

p pull p probable x to 4h around 7 balanced

4n your favorite form of blackwood*

p and pull probable x to 4n to play*

5d dia control (almost assuredly short around 4 points) (promises H suupport)

p pull probable x to 5d same as 5d bid but around points)(promises heart support)

5h around 10 balanced with heart support

6d dia void around 4 points (promises heart support)

p pull probable x to 6d same as 6d but around 7 points

you still have 4s 5c 5s 5n available for different agreements

* these two reversed using pass/pull logic because there is an

inference available that when p does not take control of the

bidding it is because they cannot. Therefore the immediate use

of 4n as blackwood leaves this inference intact.

Using this method I would bid 5d over 4d but I downgrade

queens and especially jacks for slam purposes so I would

treat this as aropund a 5 point hand.

Well, I tried to employ the nice little boxed quotation thingie, but I guess I'll ahve to read up on the tools. Sigh.

Anyhoo, the actual hands don't contribute much to the problem posed, (1) partner didn't have a 2C opener and (2) RHO indeed should've bounced immediately. Partner's hand was a 2N opener, and not a "cherce" (Spencer Tracey, _Pat & Mike_ I think  ) one at that: AKx AJ98x KQ Axx. Even so, if partner had understood the 5D call, I would think 5H is auto.
