Huge hand

Recommended Posts

Yesterday, in an ACBL IMP pair game on BBO, I picked up:

[hv=pc=n&n=saqj6hakdakqcak86]133|100[/hv]

All vul, I was in second seat.

I opened 2 and got the expected 2 response (negative - less than 4 HCP).

What is your plan? Do you just chicken out in 3NT or do you try for more?

In my partnership 2 shows less than an Ace, a King or 2 Queens. K is out, Q is still possible. I might bid 4NT specific Queen ask to figure it out, but that means I'll end up in 5NT if he doesn't have one. Bleh!

3NT is enough I think.

If 2NT now would be forcing, I'd try that. Maybe pard has an unbalanced hand and can now show it. Who knows? It costs nothing.

If it would be non-forcing, I wouldn't bid 4NT unless I was sure pard would take that as quantitative. In that case I'd settle for 3NT.

How can 2N be sensibly played as forcing here?

very easy, you throw the 22-23 bal hands into multi or whatever 2 openings and the forcing 2NT lets you, transfer, stayman and other sexy stuff that rightsides and finds good fits.

I expect this to be very unpopular, but I am strongly tempted to bid 2

If partner raises, he's got Kxx or xxxx (either way, I'm safe).

Partner will have enough room to show a Diamond suit or a Heart suit and can bid 2N a balanced hand and scattered values.

If partner temporizes with 3, I'll rebid 3N.

It's hard to image a hand that can't show shape after 2, but prefers a Moysian in Spades to 3N

If I counted this right, I have 30 HCP. Maybe it's too simplistic but I cannot imagine just bidding 3N with 30 HCP. We need very little for slam, and partner is unlikely to have zero even when he has 0-3, 2 and 3 are much more likely. On top of that he might have a long suit in which case we don't really need HCP to make slam. I would just bid 4N which obv is more than "28" since partner showed less than 4. Partner will not judge perfectly but he'll know a 6 card suit or a queen is very good (or obv the SK), and other things aren't.

This would be good if partner bids 5x if he has 5 and 6x if he has 6 I wouldn't go so far as bid 7x if he has 7 tho :)

Not convinced partner can bid a 5-card suit at the five-level (See the given heart suit).

Perhaps all 5-level bids should show six of them. I think if responder has 6 hearts he will be playing 5, and with 6 of anything else he will get raised.

I'm not rebidding 3N with a 30 point hand. The worst possible hand by pard still yields nine tricks, and you can construct hands that make 7 (although in fairness many of these are not passing 3N).

I'll rebid 4N.

Unfortunately there is no real cure for that kind of hands. In that type of hands when pd holds a length in minor suit which he cant show, outcome always turns dissapointing.

Assume your pd has some trash like, xx xxx xx xxxxxx OR xx xxx xxxxxx xx OR xx xxxx xx xxxxx. You will end up playing your slam/grandslam in 3NT or 4NT or 5NT whatever your agreements are. Perhaps u can reach if play strong , idk.

It seems that many posters believe that a suit bid by responder over the 4NT rebid by opener shows length in the bid suit. Is that true for all suits? What does 5 mean? Clubs? Stayman? Baron? Something else?
