whereagles
4NT by north instead of pass comes to mind...
mfa1010
Uh, south's double is not penalty. North is very wrong to pass with a void.
Free
When partner doubles for takeout, don't pass with a void in their suit! I'm not 100% happy with South's Dbl, but North's pass is from outer space imo.
ArtK78
Whether the double of 4♥ is penalty, takeout or card showing is a matter of partnership agreement. That said, South should realize that North will leave in the double a good percentage of the time for lack of any practical alternative. So South should not double with 4-7 in the blacks. I would bid 5♣ on the South hand. 4♠ could be right, but it is just not practical to look for it. If 5♣ is wrong, at least it won't be a disaster. I blame South. Hanoi5
I bet North just thought with the ♥ void that his/her partner was penalizing the opponents with a lot of trumps. Or something. Anyway I blame North, South did well to double (assuming the double not to be penalty). If the 4♥ X is meant as penalty then South should have done something else. gwnn
I don't think I like either but the pass from N is clearly very bad. I'm not accustomed to bidding strategies on 7-4 hands in competition with a void in partner's suit and a doubleton in opps' suit but I think double is OK with them, especially if 90% of hcps is in the 4 card suit. So I think S bid well after all and N was very bad.
mike gill
Double by south seems right - what else? Introducing topless 7-card suits at the 5-level seems like losing bridge to me. Seems like north has an auto 4n if you're playing responsive-type doubles. If not, blame goes to the methods.
mfa1010
Whether the double of 4♥ is penalty, takeout or card showing is a matter of partnership agreement. In principle yes, but playing penalty doubles here is just atrocious.
pirate22
North sitting with the hand shewn and passes. then 4 hts -x by partner and passes again. should not complain missing a grand...... north could bid 2n/t over 1 ht---- when it comes to southwhether east makes any bid -south knows what to do -it will get you to 6 cl minimum
