I'd start with 2, this might fetch 2 from partner and then I'd bid 2NT. A direct 2NT is 11-12 for me and although I have 13 my hand is kinda ugly and I don't want to punish partner for doublin g with a shapy hand.

3 was too much, why didn't you bid 2?

All the approaches (2, 2NT or 3NT) mentioned would have worked in this hand. Why 3?!

(I'm west) 3 was asking for a stopper for nt. I had assumed it was gf but perhaps you can stop in 4m

asking for a stopper when East has a stopper himself does not seem right. It assures that your side will pass up 3NT when it is right and the person unlikely to have a stopper doesn't have one.

my thoughts exactly

One should make a general rule that the cheapest bid should not be used for highly unlikely hand types. And that partners shouldn't jump cue to ask for a stopper when a cheaper cue is available to set a general gameforce.

Thank me later.

Looks like a pretty textbook 3NT here, with standard agreements. Heart stop, game-forcing values, not 4 spades, no 5-card minor.

The problem with just bashing 3N is that we likely only have hearts stopped once, and opposite a random minimal takeout double, which by far is the hand partner is a favorite to have, I don't see us taking 9 tricks without losing the lead.

As west, what's the reason behind bidding 4C? It seems to me that your spades are better, and more importantly, 3S is cheaper so you can still get to (for example) 3NT.

I had already shown 4's, I was not interested in playing in 3N with T8 in opps suit, partners 3's is asking for a stopper. I think 3 should show a hand too strong to overcall 1.

4 is an attempt to find the best spot past 3N.

:) :)

I am dead serious about bidding 3S with your hand though.

So with a hand too strong to overcall 1 I would double and bid 4/3?

Now 3 here is only 4 spades, looking for the best part score?

I must admit that I had never seen the auction 1H - Dbl - p - 3H before, and maybe I will never see it again. As I posted before, jumping to 3H as a stopper ask should be forbidden when 2H is also available for a general force. Over 1H - Dbl - p - 2H - p you can jump to 3S with the strong hand with spades. After 3H it is ugly (which is why one shouldn't jump to 3H unless it has a precise meaning), I'd probably still bid 3S to see what partner is up to.
