my pard say pass in expert consensus

Recommended Posts

Well, I would pass.

You have 10 hcp, which is less than the normal total to open. In compensation, you have some distribution. This hand seems to be pretty borderline between 1 and pass, and certainly I could see people going either way.

The problem is that if you open 1, you don't have a good rebid to partner's 1NT. You are much to weak to rebid 2 (which is a reverse), so you will probably be stuck bidding this horrible heart suit for a second time. That's unlikely to be a success.

If you had the same high card strength with better hearts (i.e. AQxx AT87xx xxx -), or if your cards were rearranged such that you can bid a second suit without distorting the hand (Axx Txxxxx AQ8x -) then opening looks good.

I vote for the 2 rebid. ;)

I open 1H and expect partner to bid 1S (4+ spades!) or raise hearts (3+ hearts!), or make a game forcing bid (lho didn't bid and we have 10 points) in which case I can bid 2S and not have to misdescribe my shape, or for the opponents to bid and I won't have to distort my shape. You guys are so negative! If I knew it was going to go 1H p 1N p I might consider not opening I guess.

I think i shd have made it clear that my 2 rebid will be only over 1 NT response. (fixed it) I play 1--2x--2 does not promise extras.

well, I sure prefer a 1 opening to pass.

If P doesn't bid S, you always have more or less OK 2 rebid.

UGH.

I've indeed heard a lot of experts say how important it is to "get in the first shot".... but in a borderline case like this, I prefer to have a high-card point in my opened suit. I pass, but I wouldn't yell in my partner's face for opening this hand himself.

Everybody has to draw their line somewhere, and this is just below my own line.

Of course, heaven knows that if I held this hand and passed at the table, partner would turn up with Kx AJxx xx Qxxxx, and the hand could be PASSED OUT when we were a big favorite to land the slam.

I think that opening 1H is quite normal nowadays. I would open 1H and I consider myself sounder than most about such things.

What surprises me is the number of people who say they would rebid 2D over 1NT. To me that is one strange bid - rebidding 2H is even more normal than opening 1H in my view.
