Negative double instead of free bid

Recommended Posts

Presumably it downgraded its hand for some reason, maybe because of the values in the opponent's suit.

Seems to me that you were expecting that it was underbidding when you jumped to 3 with your good minimum.

Too bad it didn't leave the double in, though. Looks to me like you're probably making an overtrick, although a heart lead and club switch hold you to 3.

I've actually asked this question a few times now. Responses have always included words like "maybe", "probably", and "for some reason". I was hoping someone would be able to say "GIB's requirements for a free bid are..."

I would have opened then rebid 2 with xxx, QJ, AQxxx, Axx, so I thought my actual hand was worth the jump, (edit: especially given opp's call). But yes, I was also aware that GIB's negative doubles have a stronger range than most human players'.
