I chose double but if partner passes I'm gonna feel pretty bad till I see we have no slam. This is a hand where bidding 6 could turn into a real disaster or a call to the Director and a scandal. I want to bid 6, but it might just be too much, 5NT might fetch 6 from partner but both these calls have some merit though. I'm not playing 5 if that's what partner bids but really, would partner bid with only two kings at this level? I regret the double everytime I think about it.

Your partner is forbidden to bid 6!, here is how 2 places to play works: You promise 2 places, and he must pick another 2. He bids his lowest pick, and you pass or correct. The lowest possible strain he picks cannot be spades.

For my education could you explain why 6 would be disaster a call to the Director and a scandal, please?

Thanks in advance,

Simon

This is a reference to a hand which occurred in last year's Spingold which caused a major scandal on these Fora and in the Bridge community in general. Without getting into the persons involved, in direct seat over a preempt a player jumped to slam in a 4-card suit rather than his near-solid 6-card suit. It turned out that the slam in the 4-card suit was cold (and virtually unbiddable) and the slam in the 6-card suit had no play. Ever since then, a number of posters (myself included) have commented about the possibility of jumping to slam in a 4-card suit whenever a remotely similar situation presented itself on these Fora.

Partner's hand is QJ9xxx Kxxx void xxx. I bid 6C...

I think that is very reasonable, but to be fair doubling should work also. Partner should take it out to 5 with his decent hand and a diamond void. We would then convert to 6.

And over 6 he...

I think I'd pass, but I don't find 6 unreasonable, 6 is not very appealing but also crosses my mind.

Spades produce discards for slow heart losers, that's the reason why I'd pass 6.
