senor bert
How do you open with 5-5 in the minors of equal strength (or unequal strength)?
Hanoi5
1♦. Most people also open that with 4-4 in the minors. I prefer 1♣ with 4-4 if balanced.

fromageGB
I don't really think relative strength has much of a bearing. You have to show both suits to play in the best fit, and if partner has your weak suit then your good suit will play for a number of tricks as a side suit. Just open 1♦ and forget the relative strength.

In fact, if you play 5 card majors, consider taking it a step further and open 1♣ with any (semi-)balanced hand not the right strength for your 1NT (may be a doubleton club). Then the 1♦ opening guarantees either 6 diamonds or a shortage elswhere. The hand has to be in one of 3 categories - 3 suited, single suited in diamonds, or both minors. This in turn means that 1♣ guarantees either 6 clubs, or at least a doubleton in every suit, making subsequent bidding over a minor opening so much easier.
