strong club interference questions

Recommended Posts

1. 1C (2H) dbl as takeoutish/bal 6+ doesn't promise a rebid, right?

2. What's a good defense against Suction? 1C (2D as hearts or black suits) ? For instance, should dbl show a desire to penalize one of these combinations and pass would be 0-7 any or 8+ directionless? OR should dbl just put us in a GF? We use Rubensohl, so 3D would show hearts? What should 2H by responder show?

3. Against psychosuction, 1C (2H being hearts or black suits) presume hearts?

4. 1C (2C natural) play transfers? 2D-semipositive+ hearts, 2H-semipositive+ spades, 2S-semipositive+ diamonds?

What 3C (normally diamonds a la Rubensohl)and 3D (normally hearts) show?

5. Unusual vs unusual always? I.e. if we know their 2 suits. 1C (1N minors) 2H is semipositive hearts? What would double show? Desire to penalize or any GF?

6. If they make a 2-suited jump showing that suit and an unspecified other suit, we can react as if it's one-suited. What does best against 1C (2H showing hearts and spades)? Now we know both suits but have only one cue bid available. What does responder's 2S bid show?

1. t/o. yes it doesnt promise a rebid

3. yes but 3 is obv. natural gf

4. yes thats a good idea. 3=majors, gf.

5. No when partner has not indicated a suit I don't think UvsU should apply. Play 2 as t/o with longer hearts, 2 with longer spades. 2M nonforcing. Maybe 2NT/3 could be GF with hearts/spades.

Simply use transfers to show OUR stuff.

Later may be misfit-known penalty double.

I don't think transfers are right...unless acceptance of the transfer doesn't promise a fit. When we haven't found a fit, we need to conserve room.

For interference of 1C of 2C, 2D, or 2S how about...

P-negative, trapping, or awkward

dbl-6+ balanced/takeout, could be GF without a stopper

2L-suit, forcing but not GF

.....2N-nf and stopper not guaranteed

.....raise-nf

.....new suits or cue bid, f

2N-balanced and stopper, 8-10 or 13+

cue-4441 short their suit

3L-GF

3N-11-12 with stopper

Everything seems to have its drawbacks. Using dbl as any semipositive OR balanced without a stopper would be overloaded. Transfers make some sense, but acceptance of the transfer seems like it should be a forcing bid and most use it as nf.

I think this structure is similar to what happens in competitive auctions after 1 of a suit. The opponents make an overcall and most of us lower our standards for a 2/1 to be forcing but not game forcing because...

1) we can get shut out if we don't, partner has trouble otherwise describing his hand and RHO may raise

2) responder has fewer points on average after opponent has made a call. It's a frequency issue.

3) slam is less in the offing and there's less need to set trump within a GF so as to facilitate cue bidding, etc.

I have notes from a top pair and they play...

1C (2C) dbl can be...

1) a balanced hand without a stopper

2) any semipositive (5-8) that doesn't want to penalize 2C

3) 4441s with clubs

The double promises a rebid over any rebid but 2N. Seems overloaded still.

I think transfers are by far the best approach. You should use them as INV+(in 2nd level) and if opener accepts it is NF. Typically it is made with 2 card support and w/o much extra strength.

I don't really understand why it ''seems'' for you that acceptance should be forcing.

When we haven't found a fit, we need to conserve room.

That's exactly the advantage that you get from using transfers.

Btw, do you prefer 2(opening)-2M also being forcing? It somehow resembles me this situation.
