USA Team Trials

Recommended Posts

Looks like a changing of the guard over the past year...not that Fred and Co were exactly youngsters when they won in Philly, but maybe we're witnessing the end of an era and the beginning of a new one.

I agree that this may signal a new "era", but I wouldn't call DIAMOND the old guard, considering both their respective ages and the fact that as a team they haven't been dominant for long. Hell, losing by 0.25 IMPs/board in the trials final is hardly a sign of obsolescence.

I'd say the old guard is NICKELL and their contemporaries, including FLEISHER, who let's not forget are USA1 this year. I do believe those folks will be less and less prominent as time goes on. And I'm glad to see BATHURST doing so well. I won't be surprised if they win the BB.

I doubt "those folks" will be less prominent over time. :)

I would hardly call that team over the hill.

With that said congrats to the winners and congrats to all the forum members in the Team Trials.

You all played great and a huge best wishes.

i think you guys proved you deserved it without any doubt, but the Diamond team played some amazing comeback bridge in the last segment. i was on the edge of my seat for every board.

My impressions bridge wise from the matches I watched:

-Meckwell are out of shape as they made many cardplay mistakes; I saw k's of hands on vugraph from them and it was very unusual I wonder what happened;

-cardplay in general was at very high level, especially declarer play

-competitive bidding (fighting for partscores, finding saves) was at very high level I especially enjoyed our forum hero display in this respect

-slam bidding is at very low level; some prominent pairs just use rkcb (or 100 varietes of it) and bash slams on most hands and lack methods of inviting, finding fitting values etc. I was shocked seeing some auctions, Italians and Polish guys seem to have big edge in this area.

It will be very interesting BB. Two strong American teams, fresh and strong Italian team and I think Polish team will be very dangerous too (Narkiewicz - Buras, Kalita - Gawryś, Martens - Jassem). I have trouble deciding who to root for so I just hope the winners will show amazing bridge :)

Congrats :)

Unfortunately I wasn't able to watch the second half of the match. I will be rooting for you guys in coming BB. Remember that you haven't won anything yet ;)

ummm...they won a trip to the Bermuda Bowl representing USA bridge. That's pretty cool, I think.

Can someone give us some background on Zagorin? I had never heard of the guy, but apparently he came up through the junior ranks with Bathurst, Wooldridge, etc..

Also, I've never heard of a sponsor being as young as 39. I think thats pretty cool, and very good for the game.

Team Bathurst outplayed their opponents in every single match. Justin and Joe were on fire for the whole tournament. I am very happy that now everybody had a chance to see just how good this guy really is.
