Phil
Ok Bathurst v Diamond. Grue v Moss. Let the (head) games begin!
JLOGIC
Don't forget about Hampson with the head games! He is very close with both Joe and me and I hang out with him daily when we are in town. I think he is the best player in the world, and it is impossible to win a bridge conversation with him. He is like the final boss. He also loves to needle :P
JLOGIC
Though with Brad vs Joe, funny story from a long time ago, Brad had 8 and it went 2N p ? to him. He passed. Joe doubled as expected on his left. This was in a serious event, the blue ribbons.

I'd like to say I psyched my pass but it was a definite misbid. I got the balance and my 500 :)
gwnn
Now we will know what is harder: Logic or Diamonds?

kenberg
Good going and best wishes. Usually statistics bore me, but I am curious: If we compute the average age of the finalists, is this the lowest average age in a major open event for a long time? I have deliberately left it vague ("major event" and "long time"). People are people, young or old, male or female, whatever, and I don't dwell on demographics, but bridge has such an image as being a game for those too old to manage at shuffleboard that I really like this youth factor. I haven't followed Go in the last 2 years so much; in 2008, Yi-Setol (then 25) finally became universally regarded to be the best player, ousting Yi Chang-Ho (then 30). Since then, I am sure a couple of 20-year-olds have emerged who are threatening to dethrone both of them. Justin is (I think) the youngest on this team and has been playing bridge professionally for a decade. Something feels wrong to me about celebrating a finals appearance of a team of 30-year-olds as the arrival of the youth factor. "It's about time!" feels more like it. But anyway, to answer your question, the team winning the Bermuda Bowl in 1981 contained three players, including the anchor pair, of age 25 or younger. (I think their names were Meckstroth, Levin and Rodwell, but I am not sure I remember them right.) Still the average age of that team may have been higher than Bathurst's. han
I have rooted for Fred's team often enough that I have no problem at all with rooting for team Bathurst now. Go get them Justin!

MickyB
At the time of writing, Bathurst are 94 up, it's looking like there won't be an eighth set. Congratulations, Justin+co - you haven't just won the trials, you've obliterated some world class opposition over very long matches. I am looking forward to following you in Veldhoven. Edit: This was premature, Diamond are playing on 81 down. I shan't delete my post...although if it gets to within 25 I may reconsider this position :P Edited May 18, 2011 by MickyB

mikeh
For an event like this, I come out of posting retirement: I didn't see a lot of the bridge but what I did see was very, very impressive.....congrats to the Bathurst team and to Justin in particular, since he is the big forum presence on the team. Looks like a changing of the guard over the past year...not that Fred and Co were exactly youngsters when they won in Philly, but maybe we're witnessing the end of an era and the beginning of a new one. Phil
I echo Mike's comments. The last set was wild and wooly, and closer than I expected. I'm expecting great things in October!
