The other thing that is weird is while J9 are two equals they are not perceptively equal to the holder.

To prevent declarer's exploiting this, the defender should follow this strategy:

J9: Always play the 9

J10: Always play the jack

109: Always play the 10

Of course, not all defenders understand this, and many (sensibly enough) don't care. However, when a defender plays specifically the ten you can't get any useful information - either he's correctly playing as above, or he's incorrectly playing randomly from J10/109.

Surely this strategy requires knowledge that declarer is missing JT9, and if you know that, you can randomise from all three holdings.

24imps with 30 boards to go. Bathurst huge favorite now :)

For some people Bathurts was favourite even b4 the match started. Some of you may laugh at this but Nickel team did not win anything since last BB, in fact they were not even close to winning in main events most of the time since then. Of course it is hard for one to recall a match which is scheduled 100+ boards and Nickel lost but their recent performance was saying otherwise. And they are playing against a team which is way stronger than most people know of imo.

My pd Aaron even put some money on bet on Bathurst team b4 they even started. My point is it was not a surprise for some people. They still have boards to play but i will be surprised if Nickel wins at this point.

To put into perspective the experience difference of their team and ours at this level, no one on our team had ever even PLAYED a 100+ board match before this tourney I think. The Nickell team on the other hand had not missed qualifying for a BB in 16 years (which is longer than I've even played bridge). They are an amazingly successful and experienced team and deserve due credit imo.

Also, gotta say I played 6 sets and all vs meckwell, and that is the most exhausted I've ever been from bridge. They really apply a ton of pressure and pretty much always make the hardest play on defense/as declarer.

Thanks all, I made the worst lead ever today vs a doubled slam but my teammates played great and carried me :)

Maybe true about the lead. But I was watching you at the Meckwell vs you table. Your side made many fewer obvious blunders, and were pretty solid throughout.

My better half watched Ham/Z, and thought something was off, there. But, that doesn't detract from a great triumph....keep it up.

A great job, Justin and his team. This was the team winning the BB two years ago, no matter what anyone says it's a tough team to beat for 6 youngsters, go, go,go!

Congratulations. The fact that mistakes are made at the highest levels shows what a wonderful and complex game this is. For many of us, being in the same room with the Nickell team would be a memorable experience. Beating them? Not in our dreams. Best wishes as you go forward.
