Lurpoa
I agree, and I wonder why no one else mentioned 2♦. The simple way of looking at this - partner made a takeout double; my longest suit is diamonds, so I bid diamonds. It is a slight underbid, but partner is balancing, and does not promise the usual strength for a takeout double. 2♦ can be very weak, and partner with 14H will pass. With that hand, you want to show partner, you have some values..... That is whole dilemma of this hand, and I guess, that is why this treath was started.
ArtK78
2♦ can be very weak. With that haWhen partner balances, he expects that you have some values based on the fact that the opponents stopped bidding. Your hand should not be very weak. Yes, 2♦ is an underbid, but everything else is an overbid.

jmcw
1NT the alternatives do not appeal
jillybean
Jilly, this is the same for 1x-dbl-p-1NT. 1NT shows values as a response to a takeout double. In the case of direct seat double, it's about 8-10, here it's about 9-12. Some people like other ranges, but these are most typical.Ok. Humour me, what do you bid with Kxxx, xxx, xxx,Qxx after (1♠) P (P) X (P)?
aguahombre
Ok. Humour me, what do you bid with Kxxx, xxx, xxx,Qxx after (1♠) P (P) X (P)?Same thing I would do if pard had doubled in the direct seat, take it out to 2C --cheap and doesn't show any values.
