J2nt interference

Recommended Posts

I don't know if its good, but in general approach we like to keep the penalty option when they decide to interfere in our GF, and we are playing the major not NT.

So x - suggests to punish (have tricks in op suit),

pass is forcing, shows nothing special (let the partner dbl if he wants to), or bid something else to invite or bid our game (sign off).

anything else is extra with suit (3level) or shortage (4level) - if we are in hearts jump to 4 shows short spade.

3 of our suit is 17+ slam oriented (strongly asks partner to start q, but with bad hand partner can still make unserious bid).

3NT shows 15-17 no shortages.

Jump to 5trump asks to bid 6 with 1st round control in their suit.

We are playing a modified J2nt where 3=min hand with shortness, 3=any hand no shortage, 3//N max with shortage in x.

What do you do with a non-minimum hand with shortage in clubs or diamonds? I guess 3NT is shortage in either? Now you are a bit high before partner knows whether his hand is good for slam or not. How does he ask you which, while being able to sign off in game if he doesn't like it, and remain forcing if he does?

I assume she means = club shortage, = diamond shortage, NT = OM shortage; it would be a bit strange to be showing spade shortage on this auction...

3 = shortage, 3 = shortage, 3N = shortage in oM

Once they intervene, it becomes more likely that the deal is about deciding what to do if they save, rather than deciding whether to bid slam. It's also less likely that you'll have shortage in diamonds or hearts.

Hence I'd switch to playing new suits as natural, with 4 as shortage. You can use the red-suit jumps to show shortage there, though you won't use them very often. That leaves pass, double, 3M and 3NT for all the other hands.

Thanks, I like this and the minimal additional memory required. :)

1 (P) 2N (3)

We are playing a modified J2nt (...) Does anyone have any methods to handle interference?

Here's a very simple method that works up to 2 steps stolen:

1 (P) 2N (3)

pass = 1st step, min

dbl = 1st step, extras

3+ = usual response

1 (P) 2N (3)

pass = 1st step

dbl = 2nd step

3+ = usual response

I call this "PODI".
