Fouled movement

About a year ago I was playing in a special game (a memorial for a well known player who had passed away) and the follwing occurred. I will relate the details as well as I can remember them.

 

We had am odd number of pairs, so it was arranged that there be an E-W sit-out at the highest numbered table. Due to an unfortunate placing of tables, for several rounds (perhaps the entire event) the NS pair at the next to last table took their boards from table 1 instead of the sit-out table. When done, they would send them to the sit-out table. The E-W players moved as they should. As a result of this, some EW players eventually would, for one round, encounter boards they had already played.

 

When this occurred, the director was called. EW were told that they would receive their original score on these boards, and to try to bid and play as normal as possible. (Try to ignore their prior knowledge of the board.) When this occurred with us (we were EW) the NS bidding went someone differently than when we first played the hand and we had information from their bidding that we would not have had the first time. As a result, we did better than we did the first time.

 

The director adjusted the NS score since things did not go as before. (No adjustement for us - we were getting our original score.) I was not sure this was right, as the bad result for NS was due to their bidding giving us information that we did not have the first time. Was this ruling correct?

 

I don't know whether it happened, but I also felt at the time that there should have been a PP for the NS who messed up the movement.

This kind of mistakes are very hard to fix. I don't think the Director should have allowed the boards to be replayed as N-S shouldn't receive scores from a board illegally played.

 

E-W have their scores from the first time they played, but allowing them to replay the boards is just catering for a non-caring audience.

L15B. One or More Players Have Previously Played Board

If any player plays a board he has previously played, with the correct

opponents or otherwise, his second score on the board is cancelled both

for his side and his opponents, and the Director shall award an artificial

adjusted score to the contestants deprived of the opportunity to earn a

valid score.
