Tricky hand to bid! I think South should do more than 5C, but hard to when he can't guarantee two aces in his partner's hand. Then again, he can almost certainly imagine a singleton or void diamond opposite from the opps bidding, so might take a punt.

What about North? Well, 3S is fine and you can understand his reluctance to go on over 5C, but it's a very good hand he has. Basically this needed the Q and A of hearts swapped over, then South would have an easy 6C and North wouldn't have to "underbid". :)

So to be honest, I can't blame N or S really, so I blame East for his raise to 4D :P

South could probably bid 6C but the opps might only have 9 diamonds (depends who they are), and there's an outside chance partner doesn't have both aces even if they don't. North cannot do more. These situations just require educated guesswork.

I would double for takeout then pull 4 to 5 to show a hand too good to bid 5. I would hope partner would bid 6 over this but couldn't guarantee it. Clearly you need to be sure that partner will take this as your hand type, rather than 5 being a cue in support of hearts.

Seems like a normal auction to me. The other day on a strong tournament an opponent of mine faced a similar situation and missed a cold slam. He wasn't alone: more than 2/3rds of the field missed it.

In fact, leave N/S to bid alone and I'm sure they'll miss slam a considerably fraction of the time.

I voted North could do a little more since he has great controls. Unfortunately 5 might be raised to 6, so maybe 5 (or 5NT?) is better. Another thing is that maybe South could be missing the A and then 5 is the limit, so probably no one is to blame. Pre-emptives work sometimes.

Why not double or 4D with North's hand (only majors) South bid of 5C must be strength counting on North for at least AK in the majors so an easy take to 6C

I think 4 usually shows 5-5 or better - with south hand I would support over 4...http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif
