high level decision

Recommended Posts

Yeah, I think it's impossible to pass then bid 5H natural, all of those hands should bid 3H to begin with. The key here is that bidding after comp over 2C does not show 2 of the top 3 anymore, it's important to bid your suits before being preempted.

So to me 5H shows a first round control and is a grand slam try, but of course with the HA we know thats not the case, so it's hard to answer how to bid after that.

This auction hadn't come up before and I spent some time wondering what to do over 5 and 5X. I thought the pass over 5X made it more likely partner had than .

After 2 (2X) should double show no more than an Ace or King or a balanced hand with values, no stopper? So after 2 (2) partner would pass with xxx,Kxxx,Kxx,xxx and xx,Kxxxx, xxx, xxx, or would you still bid 3 on the second hand?

No, I wouldn't bid king fifth. But I presume 5H natural here is more than a 5 card suit, and a large majority of the time that I had 6 hearts and some values I would bid it after they overcall (might depend on suit quality/rest of hand if I didn't).

I think the main point on this hand is that East should bid 3 over 2. This is hand is huge if you have a fit.

Yes, I understood that. I was wondering what is the minimum hand that would bid 3 or any suit, as opposed to pass.

You seem to have the agreement that pass shows an ace of king, and bidding anything denies this?

Possibly a better agreement is that used by 2/1 players when a 2/1 response gets interfered with. X is penalty, pass is takeout, and a suit bid is a suit worthy of being trumps (after a bit more interference, pard needs to know whther he has to be holding lots of middle cards in the suit to make it a trump suit, he could be facing a high-level decision at this point).

If you pass, then pard's (opener's) double just shows a balanced hand without a particular desire for a trump suit. Then when you are holding 2-4 cards in the suit each you can still penalise even though neither of you have a trump stack. Bidding a suit is a suit that wasn't worthy of independently being a trump suit in the first instance (but now that you know pard is balanced, it is a possibility).
