  1. 1. Your bid

I used to double on these hands and it kept going horribly wrong, so now I pass and let it go horribly wrong in a different way.

Not the best contract and after the 5lead I proceeded to murder it and went 1 off when hearts broke 3-3. I see now that I should draw trumps and treat the hand like a no trump contract. In fact 11 tricks can be made when the last heart squeezes South in the minors. It just shows that you can often survive with bad bidding provided that you play the hand well.

If you're West and you're trusting East to deliver four hearts or even three strong ones, 4H is automatic. In fact, with 4H I would be more worried about missing a slam than going down.

With the East hand, I would pass, but not happy about it at all. At the table it would turn out OK, since West would balance with 2NT, and we would bid 3NT.
