BTW: In case people don't know, book 5 is now out...

George R.R. Martin is doing a signing in Burlington MA tonight which I must sadly miss due to end of quarter bullshit.

26% along. My goal is 50% by this evening. That may not fly with others in this house who seem to believe that I should interact with them. We'll see.

Finished as of this morning. It does include POV characters from FfC as it goes further in the timeline from there. But I won't say anymore and spoil it. :)

Oh, except to say that you shouldn't read the appendix before you read the book. There are some mild spoilers in it.

Those of us who read the books love the series also. The TV show is pretty faithful to the novels, with some minimal changes to accommodate limited time and budget. There are always some minor quibbles but overall its very well done.

Excited? I'm sure it will be several years before the next book comes out.

Oh wait you people are talking about TV....

The TV series is very good - it's up to to the usual HBO standards of production. If you haven't watched deadwood and the wire for example, you should do so immediately.

Not happy with how last episode, episode 4 ended. I know it' a fantasy series, but sigh :( I hope it doesn't become about all of this fantasy/supernatural BS.

FWIW, the fantasy elements of the series are fairly muted.

Other than the dragons and the occasional resurrection.

I don't find it overly distracting

it depends on how much emphasis they place on it, and it looks like it could play too large a role... we all know the books can't be faithfully recreated in any series, so there's some leeway as to where the emphasis is placed, even on what can conceivable be completely ignored

I wouldn't say it's ALL about the fantasy/supernatural stuff. As Hrothgar said, it's pretty minimal.

What I really like about the book series is that magic is not the solution to everything. It's not all about finding the correct spell.

Sure, I love game of thrones, greatest thing since sliced bread etc I'm just hoping they don't ruin it. The smoke monster thing scared me. I still have faith, but that was a big wtf moment and not in a good way to me. Guess I'll have to wait to see where that goes, I haven't read the books, was just expressing a concern that this could be a bad change. Truly amazing show up to this point.

Here's a useful analogy:

In many ways Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings are antithetical to one another.

Lord of the Rings is an outgrowth of Tolkien attempt to create an epic mythology for Great Britain combined with his love of language.

It's a masterful piece of high fantasy.

Game of Thrones is rooted in the War of the Roses. Its grim a grim attempt to portray a more "realistic" fantasy world.

However, there are certain similarities between the two series. One of the most important is the use of magic.

Magic is a very important component of both worlds. However, it rarely manifest's itself directly.

Think of Lord of the Rings...

Yeah, Frodo turned invisible once and a while. Gandalf created some fireworks and broke a bridge...

However, you don't have everyone and their brother running around casting fireballs at each other.

In a similar manner, the use of magic in Game of Thrones is very restrained...

(There's a scene where one of the maester's explains that lots of people TRY to cast spells/learn magic, but no one ever succeeds...)

This isn't the first magical thing in the series.

We already had:

Zombies (episode 1 even)

Kal Drogo "resurrection" and Dany's baby

Bran's dreams

Dany's seeming immunity to heat

Direwolves + dragons

Red priestess drinks poison w/o effect

With all that said, this is not a series where magic is common or ostentatious or the solution to any problems.

I guess I was trying to reassure you that this does not signal a change where the series will be like Harry Potter.

My main problem with this episode was with the violence. Some was added in, but I think there's a big difference reading about it, and actually seeing it on screen. Adam just replayed the episode on DVR, and I deleted it after. I don't know if I am going to be able to watch that episode again. I don't know why the killing didn't bother me, but the torture in this episode did.
