dcohio
Club hand from the other night... we ended up -800 in 5♠X after: 1♠-1NT-(3♦)4♥-5♣-(X)5♥-5♠-(X) [hv=pc=n&s=s5hd842ckjt876543&n=sqjt92hkqj97542dc]133|200[/hv]
pooltuna
North needs to learn to bid like others of this universe. Of course that presumes they have the intellectual capacity to do so.
kayin801
I plussed the fish's post. I open spades over hearts when I'm 5-6 more than others, but ummmmmm holy moley not on this hand. How about 1♥-1NT-(3♦)-4♥, or 4♥-AP?

Free
1♥-pass-pass-pass  Seriously, that 1♠ opening is ridiculous, just open your longest suit first (lesson nr 1 for beginners after they learned how to count HCP).
P_Marlowe
Hi, Why did North start with spades, when he has a heart suit, that happens to have 3 cards and 3HCP more than the spade suit? What to open with the North hand is certainly up for discussion, you will get as options 1H, 4H and Pass, but I doubt that anysane person will start with 1S. With kind regardsMarlowe
whereagles
Just open North's hand 4♥. Can bury a slam but it will save you a lot of trouble later lol. Oh, and remember to note pard opps are cold for 3NT, if not 6♦ ahah.
rhm
Everybody seems to concentrate on North's bidding. Responding 1NT with a nine card suit is apparently quite normal in this universe. Rainer Herrmann
whereagles
Of course it is. We're in Mars, remember? :)
Cyberyeti
You don't have a bottom yet, 5♣x is not a pretty sight either and could conceivably get played. But yes, always open hearts, 1 or 4 I'm not that bothered.

If North would start with 1H, and South decides to bid 1NT,than you will end up in 5C, also a terrible contract, but at least now you can say "***** happens" With kind regardsMarlowe
dcohio
playing 2/1 so 1NT is forcing... Over 1M, can't bid 2C, it's GF... can't bid 3C, it's Bergen... can't bid 4C, it's a splinter. 5C may keep us out of slam if partner has the right hand. So... 1NT it is. ArtK78
This partnership gets my nomination for the worst bid hand of the millenium (so far). And, for once, the result matched the bidding. :) Perhaps it is just a vision problem on the part of both North and South. North may have had 2 of his hearts mixed in with his spades. That would explain the 1♠ opening bid. As for South, he must have had his clubs and diamonds completely missorted and thought he was 2-1-3-7. That would explain his 1NT call. As for the rest of the auction? Sorry, I can't think up any more excuses. :) On the other hand, the opposition appears to have bid the hand perfectly. :)
hrothgar
Comment 1 Your sitting on an 8-5 hand. Almost any sane bid could be right with a freak like this one. However, 1♠ strikes me as WAY out there... I think that both 1♥ and 4♥ have their respective charms.I prefer 1♥ Comment 2 Passing a 9 card suit seems unreasonableGiven your system, 1NT seems like the right bid For an auction.... 1♥ - (P) - 1N - (3♦)3♠ - (P) - 4♣ - (P)4♥- All pass this might be wisful thinking, but I don't think that its outside of the realm of the possible... Here's what I don't get. North South have a 13 count between them.West preempted in Diamonds... (Lets be generous and give him a nine count) East looks to be sitting on an 18 count and wan't able to act over 1♠?
JLOGIC
Unless I missed something, everyone has at least implied that opening ONE heart is reasonable? We are 8-5 with a 9 count and a very strong 1 loser suit...jeez, just open 4H. Having a delicate auction to slam is not a priority here. Also is it just me or do the opps have 27 HCP and a 10 card fit and all they did was preempt with 3D? Edit: I see I am with whereagles at least!
JLOGIC
As far as south's bidding: I agree with the decision not to bid 5C over the 1S opening. Even though this is a 5C opener, that is largely because when it goes bad the opps are often cold for 4 of a major when we are 1-0 with little defense. Partner opening a major eliminates one of those suits from their possible games, and also generally marks him with values enough that they often won't have any game at all. On top of that, we have a lot of losers and shortness in partner's suit. Still it wouldn't be the worst thing over 1S imo (but over 1H it would be quite bad). I also agree with the 5S bid, assuming we trust partner. Our 5C bid there after partner opens a major and jumps in another major is a very strong suggestion and pretty much always an 8+ card suit. Partner overruling that should be 7-6, or some hand like KQJTxx KQJTxx x ---, where 5S will do much better.
the hog
This is a 4H opening, not a 1S or 1H opening.South's 1NT is not a thing of beauty either.
han
I don't think 1H is bad. I can still hear Ira Chorush saying that freak hands need to be bid slowly.
