  1. 1. Do you bid 2C?

    • I would bid 2C over 1D, 1H or 1S
      20
    • I would bid 2C over 1D only
      2
    • I would never bid 2C
      2

Everyone red at IMPS. S deals and opens either 1D/1H/1S (opps playing 2/1). Do you bid with this hand?

Does your answer change at different vulnerabilities or if it is matchpoints?

I will bid. Yes, it's dangerous, but I'll rather lose from non-bidding. Maybe I'll have hesitation only if vulnerability are red vs green. The suit is too good to be passed along with these side values. Vs 1H opening and if we are in green I can bid 1nt as well.

I'd bid 2 over 1/1/1

The leading directing value is enormous

Forcing LHO to come in at the two level is incredibly valuable

My trumps are solid enough that I am not worried about declaring a doubled contract at the two level

My defense is solid enough that I can pass if partner whacks the opponents

How does 2 not describe my hand?

I suppose that a case can be made to double a 1 opening bid...

This might make it harder for the opponents to find a 4-4 heart fit than 2.

However, I prefer the overcall

2 ALWAYS.

You have to tell partner you have opening values with a decent 5card .....

So whats the Damage if one bids 3 clubs-who is in trouble.

we need openers hand the 1 d bid-assume its a min 4 card suit.

What's the harm? How do play 3 here? If it's weak, you may miss a game--how can you be sure that it's their hand when many 2/1 players will open a flat 11 or a shapely 9? (Not saying that's good strategy, but it happens.) If it's intermediate, maybe the solid 5 carder will make up for the sixth trump, but the shape is poor. In either case, why are you worrying about shutting them out? 2 over anything but 1. I'm interested in JLOGIC's reasons for pass. He is a much better player than me and his idea sounds interesting.

I don't know about Justin's logic (and he is no doubt a better player than me - he would be happy to tell you if I didn't) but I try and avoid bidding 2minor overcalls with weak no trump hands. Especially vulnerable.
