LHO opens 1H and you reach 4S as South (so North is dummy and LHO is West).

LHO leads a trump (RHO following) and you see

Plan the play.

Adv/+, please refrain from spoiling too quickly.

Also, this is probably a well known theme hand, so if you find a reference, please add it.

Draw 2 , 3 rds of ending in dummy, and a diamond -- minimally covering whatever RHO plays (note that he does best to play the 9, 10, or J). If I can play the 8 here, notice that it's gg for west. He has to return a red for my 10th. If RHO plays (say) the 10, I'll play the Q. LHO presumably wins the K (else I make) and exits a diamond. Now I'll win and exit the low diamond. If LHO wins (per force or not), then he must lead a heart for our 10th. This works when LHO has the A and the K and 2 of the J109, or KJx of diamonds and fails to unblock the J under the ace on the 2nd diamond or similarly if RHO plays the J on the first diamond and LHO has the 10 or if RHO fails to play higher than the 8 on the first diamond. Lots of chances.

You can do a little better.

Pull three rounds of trumps. A little squeeze is always good. Now, play three clubs as indicated, ending in dummy to lead a diamond, as indicated in the first spoiler.

The risk is that RHO sticks in J, 10, or 9. If you just play the Queen, losing to the King, LHO might play back a similar card (J, 10, or 9), and you will be in a tad of a pickle. If you win and exit, RHO might get in to switch.

If you see RHO play J, 10, or 9, win the Ace. Cross to dummy again with a trump to lead a second diamond toward hand. If RHO plays small, you now can play the 8. If another J, 10, or 9, cover.

This way caters to RHO having two of the top three diamonds.

Draw trumps (keeping 2), draw three rounds of clubs ending in dummy, lead a diamond. If RHO plays something lower than 8, cover with the 8 and we're okay. (will get either an extra diamond winner or the K). If he plays 9-j, play the ace. Lead the 2 to be back in dummy, lead a diamond. If RHO plays higher than 8, play the queen. Otherwise, play the 8. In any case, LHO wins and can't give RHO the lead with diamonds, so he has to cash 2 diamonds and his A of hearts, so our K hearts wins.

The only way I see for this to fail is if RHO has exactly JT9. Is it impossible that LHO opened with a 12-count?

Strangely, however, it seems that the crazy 8 lure is only a lure contextually. It seems that without the inference from the opening bid, the line we suckers eventually fell into would be the best line.
