Weak Jump Overcall

For me everything depend of the VUL:

We NV, opps V: it might be very light - 0-6 hcp.

NV vs NV or V vs V: like opening - 6-10 hcp.

We V, opps NV: it's an opening hand with good suit.

When I'm doing jump overcalls I have principles:

NV vs V: down 3/4

V vs V or NV vs NV: down 2/3

V vs NV: down 1/2

Generally - strength - never make a WJO if

a hand is good enough for a simple overcall

in the first two seats. No minimum strength

requirement NV, in fact I love to do it with zero.

Vul, need some points in the suit, but QJ10xxx

and out is fine. In the 3rd and 4th seat,

you can do it with a stronger hand, as long as

you're pretty sure you're not missing game.

This depends on how light you open.

Specifically, playing with a pickup pd:

Vul, 6+ cards at the two level, normally 7 at the 3.

V vs V, I would go 1D(3C) or 1C(3D) with 6.

Amount of preemption does matter, and it's

much more useful to overcall 1m than 1M,

because 1m is so poorly defined.

The suit should be OK. Amount of preemption

matters in determining acceptable suit quality.

You should also be more willing to overcall if

your pd is a passed hand.

NV, 6 cards is OK at the 3 level. Suit quality

doesn't matter much. Just bid, ESPECIALLY

if pd is a passed hand, unless your suit is

totally empty, you have some defense,

and the bid would be at the 3 level.

Playing with my regular pd, we play the

above when vul, but NV we will go 1x(2M)

with 5 cards without a care in the world,

and do 1D(3C) or 1C(3D) with 5 as well

if pd is a passed hand. I do NOT do this

with pickup pds, and I don't do it if

a hand is good enough for a simple overcall

in the first two seats.

With a casual pard or vulnerable, I tend to be conservative. With my regular pard I play 5-6 card destructive style NV

min: xx KQTxxx xxx xxx

max: x AKxxxx QJx xxx (rare... lol)

Three range step replies to 2NT relay.

If pard is passed, the story is different... I might overcall on 15 points even.
