kenrexford
As dealer: ♠x ♥KJ109x ♦KJ10xx ♣KJ I opened 1♥, 2NT minors overcall, 4♥ from partner, all pass. Diamond Ace lead, and Dummy table: ♠xxxx ♥8xxxx ♦Qx ♣A10 Diamonds went Ace-x-x-K. LHO (white on red) looked at her partner and said, "Geez, and you couldn't bid 5♦?!?!?!?" RHO, to her GREAT credit, responded, "I know. I'm a chicken sometimes!" The spade switch then eventually sealed the deal.
ArtK78
Interesting comment by RHO, intentionally misleading her partner. Clearly, LHO's comment is out of line. But would silence by RHO be unethical?
kenrexford
Well, "out of line" is a tad harsh. No one at the table could possibly miss the diamond King as either a wild falsecard or indicative of a strong diamond fit, so the comment does little harm. Sometimes "good fun at the table" should excuse minor indiscretions. But, that's the beauty of RHO's comment. They played along, which I thought honorable and in the spirit of the "good fun."
