They might have (probly they have) 4, let them find it, we do not have 4 (unlikely)

I'm not certain of either of those statements.

With the stiff spade, partner doesn't need much to make 4H. My problem here was 3H was a straight shut out competitive sounding bid.

If partners points are all working he only really needs 12 or so to make game here. Given that he made a vulnerable 2 level overcall after a 3rd seat opener, this could very well be our hand.

At the table I wimped out and bid 3H, passed out, making 4 opposite xxx, KJxxx, Ax, Axx

Partner's overcall is questionable at best, and we are still making game. 3 is definitely not enough, and they are definitely not making 4 lol

Three , fit non-jump by passed hand. I would like to have the Jack of clubs instead of one of the low spots. If I was an unpassed hand, this would not be available and I would bid 2NT, showing heart support and "limit or better". I could bid 2NT here as well, but showing the five clubs seems better.

Right you are. 4 of 3 depending on methods you agreed with partner.

As a passed hand, I would like to inform pard that my raise to game has some nice cards, rather than just a bunch of hearts. 3S was not given as a choice; but I would choose it.

2NT might be freed up here for a lot of minor suit cards rather than a heart raise by a passed hand. Responsive double would imply tolerance for hearts.

The trade-off is being unable to show the exact (3 vs 4) number of hearts in support. Can live with that.

I would also bid 3S showing a high card raise to 4H. I want to be in a forcing pass over 4S and partner won't get too excited opposite a passed hand. Failing that, 4H and then double 4S. I don't like a club fit bid because partner will misjudge too often - he'll think Axx KQxxxx x Axx is a seriously good hand, and he'll think Axx KQxxxx A10x x is much worse, while it's the second of these that gives the 6-level (some) play.

That makes a lot of sense. There's no guarantee 4 will make, but at least your work is done and you do not have any further difficult decision to make. I like the 2NT bid, but does it really get across your hand here? At the end of the day it appears a punt, with 3 giving partner all the information he should need.
