New Favorite Author:Krzysztol Martens

My favorite author, for more than 30 decades, has been Hugh Kelsey. Oh, i like many books by other authors, Clyde Love's Bridge Squeeze complete, quite a few Mike Lawerence books, Robson/Segal Partnership bidding, etc. But the one author who i felt like I needed most books he has written was Hugh's. Well, now Hugh has fallen to second place, being easily replaced by Martens. I had a few bought on line (in electronic format). At the Spring National, I picked up a few more -- all in hard copy. I will review some of these in later post. His Guide dog part 1 and part 2 are among the most expensive bridge books I have ever bought (I have several editions of "bridge encyclopedia" that if memory is correct cost more). I plucked down 34 dollars for EACH guide dog book. That was money well spent. When I add guide dog value to the virtual european championship book, and the calf book. I am already convinced that this guy has important stuff to say. Kelsey was good for me when I was -- well less esxperienced -- Martens is just what I needed now.

I downloaded one of Krzysztol Marten's free chapters as a pdf.

Unfortunately in the text the suit symbols are displayed as box with a question mark inside them. This only happens in the discussion text not in the hand diagrams.

Has anyone else seen this problem or know how I can fix it?

Sounds like a font problem. The PDF I have from him use the following fonts, make sure you have all of these installed.

Arial Bold (TT)

Arial Italic (TT)

Arial Narrow (TT)

CenturySchooldbook (TT)

CenturySchooldbook bold (TT)

CenturySchooldbook Italic (TT)

All six fonts are reported to be "embedded subset" and Encodeing Custom if that makes sense to you. I know I have all six of these fonts on my computer. Are you using windows? Are you using the most current version of Adobe Reader?

I ahve a lot of first chapters, and they all look fine on my computer.

I have the same problem with the GuideDog - Part 1 download, but all the others, including Guide Dog 2, are fine.

Since I have the book, I will try to help with guide dog ones. Here are symbols from the first 25 pages. I am not sure how many quide dog pages are in the "first chapter" free thing. I would be surprised if it was the entire first chapter which is 140 pages. I did the first 26 pages for you below.

At Louisville, I looked at Fox, Owl, etc.. I thought it was a great book, but to compare it to Adventures is an overbid. All six copies were sold out when I returned the next day :(.

I got one of them. :)

Bridge World claims to have all his books. Not sure if that is true. I tried ordering them quite sometime ago, and the order was never filled.
