Let's assume you really had an opening bid, or that you had to sit in for someone who thought it was an opening bid. Then the rationale for rebidding 1♠ is in accordance with (among other sources) the June 2010 Bulletin, page 59. If partner's neg double shows four spades, and you have four spades, you pretend you are raising his 1♠ response to 2. With only three of them, you can bid 1S. Phil Posted March 22, 2011 Report Share Posted March 22, 2011 1♠ and I feel pretty strongly about it. Like Gwnn, this shows 3 for me. If LHO passed and partner responded 1♠, you would pass, right? While partner is limited to four in the actual auction, LHO now threatens NT with a heart suit. So I am unclear why bidding 1N is appealing. The fact that RHO didn't raise doesn't affect my judgment. quiddity Posted March 22, 2011 Report Share Posted March 22, 2011 I think it's pretty close. Certainly a case can be made for being the first to bid 1NT white at matchpoints. However, we do have 3 good spades and a likely ruffing value in diamonds. RHO's silence makes it a bit more likely that CHO has an invitational raise to 2NT and we really don't want to hear it. Often when you open these "blah" hands you are hoping to pass a 1-level response from partner. It's an interesting idea, though, since lots of weak NTers play a strong NT in 3rd at teams.
