If partner cannot reopen on #1, we don't want to be declaring.On 2, it could be right to bid, but it will get us too high quite often, and facing most random opening bids, 2♠ is a nice place to be. Will bid 3♠ over his (would-be) take out dbl. 2. Opposite a random, 3♠. Opposite my regular pard, pass! I do like this strategy instead of a negative double since I am very comfortable bidding spades after a reopening x.I'm unclear what the real downside is. I passed the second. Pard held QJTxxx Kx Ax AJx (1N anyone?) 11 tricks were routine. At other tables our LHO made a cheesy overcall on a 2335 12 count and pairs got to 4♠ on momentum. I'd settle for 2♠ accepting the consequences if partner has 17-ish and cannot move. However, I don't know that everyone is carrying on to game if this hand doubles and partner bids 3♠.
