straube
favorable mps P P 1D 1N P 2C P 2HP 2S P ? Partner has invited with four spades. I've decided to decline the invite. Do I pass or correct to 2N? How strongly do you feel about it? Second problem... favorable mps P P 1N P 972 AK74 T75 KT2 Do you Stayman or bid 3N? Siegmund
Pass, and I feel very strongly about it. I hate being in 2NT. It is true that you will occasionally do 10 points better in NT. (And my answer might be influenced some by what 2C-then-2NT would mean.) Second question, 3NT and I feel even more strongly about it. mtvesuvius
Pass 2♠ on the first one for sure. This hand is suit oriented, and has nice spots... It'd be a shame to have it be fairly useless in 2N.3N, barring extreme circumstances, I try to almost always bid 3N on the 4M333 hands. This one is no exception. cherdano
On the second one, I would bid stayman as its MPs.
straube
I've been influence by Ron Klinger's recommendations. He wants to have the methodology to avoid 4333 opposite 4333 (and we hadn't discussed a method for this) but he prefers to play in a 4333 opposite a 4432 when the 4333 hand has the boss trump. gnasher
Pass on the first one. Playing in spades, the doubleton club may well be worth an extra trick. On the second one I'd look for a heart fit, because "balanced" hands are not always balanced, and the lack of secondary honours suggests that ruffs will be useful. aguahombre
That second one is about as "suit oriented" as a 3-4-3-3 hand can be, and we have seen that 1NT openers can be semi-balanced. Will explore for: 5-3 spade fit,5-4 heart fit,or4-4 heart fit. 3♣ (puppet enroute to 3NT).
straube
On the first hand, partner pointed out that he didn't have to have good spades. I thought it was something of a guess.
Hanoi5
I'd also Pass on the first one (pard might be able to get club ruffs in my hand and AKQ of diamonds might be fine for throwing losers and not being overruffed by LHO). 3NT on the second one, too. I might try Stayman if I think I'm in need of a special score.
whereagles
1. I'll just bid 3NT thankyouverymucho :) 2. Same thing.
