What's your bid?

Pass on both.

1. Overcalling on a 4 card suit and a 4333 is not my idea of winning bridge.

2. Here, there is some benefit to the overcall, since it might get partner away from their usual lousy lead. However, I'd rather hide the ball a little from declarer on where the heart honors are. I won't double on this shape and this strength. Partner is still there and appreciates my problem.

same for me

Good interesting problems.

1) I'll end up with a pass, followed closely by X followed closely by 1. I simply do not want partner to miscompete, if this is a partscore battle. A pass seems the best start to that. If we have a game, I find it likely that a pass wont be very decremental.

2) 1 followed by X. I wouldn't pass.

MP's is another game, here we have to "do the right thing". 1 will often allow partner to pressure the opponents, and is a good lead-director. (At MP's all the saved overtricks weighs a lot more than at IMP's.)

I would pass both. I agree with the reasoning that the danger of partner bidding too much has to be weighed against the pressure and lead-directing factors. But I don't agree that matchpoints swings it in favour of bidding. It's really important to compete to the right level at matchpoints and if we overcall with a defensive 4333 we make it very hard for partner and will influence him on future hands as well. Being green against red doesn't help if you compete when both contracts are failing.

No. If I overcall on this hand, it will be because it is within our partnership agreements. Partner can handle that. (Or he'll have to learn.)

Being MP's, it will often be right to compete more fiercely, especially when NV. At IMP's you gain nothing when you are -2, for -100 vs their 120/130/140, but at MP's the reward is much higher.

Even though I'd never pass, I am well aware that it will often be the right action, just not as often as 1 or double.

"Pass, it doesn't pay to go against the field at MP's."

LOL

I was serious, I have found that in a situation where you have no idea what will work out best it's usually right to go with the field at match points and try to pick up points in the play or defense.

I'd certainly pass at IMPs, and I think I'd pass at MPs too. The same theory that we should bid aggressively also means the opponents may double aggressively, and I know that if we get to the 3 level, we're going for 300 minimum. I'm not particularly unhappy with any lead, and really don't want to discourage a possible spade lead by partner.

I'd sooner overcall 2 than double.

If you have no iée what will work out, how are you going to go with the field?

I would pass. 1H at MPs is certainly conceivable, but it is not my style. Unlike Frances, I can easily imagine that 1H will often lead to a good result, for example by directing a good lead or making life difficult for the opponents when partner raises.

Double doesn't seem reasonable.
