A response structure to 1S

Recommended Posts

We currently open 1 lightly and therefore when responder has 3 and an invite, we regularly end up going down in 3. Therefore I have been thinking some time about a system in which responder can show an invite and still stop in 2. On the other hand, I also want to try some GF relay over major suit openings for some time now. I recently read an article over transfer responses to an 1 opening, which seemed to fit nicely with my objectives. I started to think of a system based around this and this is what I came up with.

1: 11-19 HCP 5+ (we use a strong 1NT and most 15-17 balanced hands with 5 open 1NT)

-1NT: 6+ / (semi)-balanced / GF relay, any strength

-2: 5+, any strength (usually 6+ if weak)

-2: 5+, any strength (usually 6+ if weak)

-2: 3+, 10+HCP

-2: 3 (or bad 4), 6-9

-higher: some other hands, any suggestions?

1-1NT:

-2: 4+ / 6+ / some strong hands

-2: 4+

-2: 4+

-2: 5(332) 12-14

-higher: some other strong hands

1-1NT-2:

-2: relay

-2: 4, possibly invite and singleton (since if they relay, they would be stuck after 2 response). Maybe also some 2-suited GF hands with and ?

-2: would give preference to if opener has 4+

-2NT: invite, short , not 4

-3: to play

-higher: some GF with clubs

1-1NT-2-2:

-2: 4+

-2: 6+

-higher: the strong hands

1-1NT-2-2-2:

-2: GF relay (responder would have bid 2 before if he wanted to give preference)

-2NT: invite

-3: invite

-3: invite

-other: some GF with clubs

1-1NT-2-2-2:

-2NT: GF relay (responder would not have relayed with an invite if he has short )

-3: invite

-3: invite

-other: some GF with clubs

1-1NT-2:

-2: relay (responder can't have long , since then he would have transfered to it)

-2: preference

-2NT: invite

-3: to play

-higher: some GF with clubs

1-1NT-2-2:

-2: minimum, now 2NT is GF relay and 3 invite

-higher: GF

1-1NT-2: continuations here are a bit more difficult, but at least we have found a big fit if responder has . Maybe we should limit 2 more? :

-2: preference

-2[notrump]: invite

-3: to play

-higher: GF

1-1NT-2:

-2NT: invite. Unfortunately we can't show an invite with 6+ anymore here. Maybe we should drop it from the 1NT response and bid 3 immediately?

-3: to play

-higher: GF

A system over the other responses to 1 should be developed as well, but it seems that those easier and this post is already quite long.

I would like to know what you think of a system like this. Have you maybe even seen or played something like this? What could be problematic hands? Do you have any suggestions? Note that I don't have to worry about regulations much: almost anything is allowed here. Any help is appreciated.

Seems like it's a solution to your problem with the INV hands, but I haven't had the time to investigate if your partscore bidding and intervention handling hasn't become problematic. The transfers are great if opps don't interfere ofcourse, they let you combine weak and strong hands. But I suspect auctions like 1-(pass)-2-(something) may get difficult or get you too high.

Another quick one I've seen: opener with 5-4 bids 1-1NT-2, now what should responder do if he's weak with 6-4 for instance? Opener hasn't shown min or max, so you still might have game. But if you bid you might end up too high again.

Why don't you play some system where 2 is a GF relay / INV with fit? Opener can rebid 2 or 2 with minimum hands (with or without 4), you rebid 2, end of story. Looking at your name I think you're Dutch or Flemish, a couple of years ago there was an article in IMP magazine (I think "the Drink files") where they explained this sort of system.

I believe the system I use is perfect for you. In response to 1S, 1NT is an INV+ relay and 2C/2D/2H/2S are natural weak bids. With 4+ spades it is best to support immediately with most schemes being fine - my own choice being 2N = splinter with INV or in-between (~16-19) hand; 3C = GF raise; 3D = limit raise without shortage; 3H = mixed raise; 3S/4S = preemptive raises; 3N-4H = splinters. After 1S - 1NT, 2C shows any minimum without 4 hearts and now 2D is a GF relay while other bids are natural and invitational - 2S is of course now a limit raise with 3 card support. Over the 1NT relay 2D shows 4+ hearts with 2H the GF relay and other bids natural invites - again 2S is a 3 card limit raise. Other calls over the 1NT relay are GF and follow a normal relay structure with exactly the same scheme as after 1S - 1N - 2C - 2D.

Summary...

1

=========

1N = INV+ relay

2C = 6-9, 4+ clubs

2D = 6-9 4+ diamonds

2H = 6-9, 5+ hearts

2S = 6-9, 3+ spades (usually only 3)

2N and up = various raises with 4+ spades

1 - 1N

==============

2C = min without 4 hearts (2D = GF relay, 2S = LR, 2H/2N/3m = natural invites)

2D = 4+ hearts (2H = GF relay, 2S = LR, 2N/3m/3H = natural invites)

2H and up = GF following relay scheme
